LOCAL ROUNDUP: Chaos finish second in Brunswick Tournament

The Northern Columbia Chaos 14u travel softball team played in the Brunswick Summer Heat Tournament this past weekend and for the second consecutive weekend, finished as the runner-up.

In their first pool play game, the Chaos jumped out to a 10-0 lead after four innings. Both teams scored five runs in the fifth, however, the Chaos were able to prevail.

Northern Columbia then went on to play the Adirondack Impact. The Impact jumped out to a 3-2 lead after three. Both teams added runs in the fifth bringing the score 4-3.

The Chaos rallied in the top of the seventh on base hits from Hailey Armold and Skylar Konkle, who were knocked in on a hard hit, two-RBI single to right by Ava Edmond, putting the Chaos up 5-4. Riley Strobel was able to retire all three batters in the bottom of the seventh to complete the come-from-behind win.

The Chaos then played the Halfmoon Lightning in their final pool play game. After jumping out to 10-0 lead in the first inning, the Chaos were able to complete a three-inning mercy victory on a 15-hit attack, with a final score of 15-0.

After going 3-0 in pool play, outscoring their opponents 35-9, the Chaos earned the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye in elimination play.

Northern Columbia then faced off against the No. 4 seed Adirondack Impact. The Chaos scored six unanswered runs until the sixth when Adirondack was able to add a run. The Chaos then added three more runs and came away with a 9-1 mercy victory to advance to the championship game against the No. 2 seed Brunswick Blitz.

Brunswick jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Northern Columbia went on to out score Brunswick 4-2 over the remainder of the game, scoring two in the third and two in the sixth but it wasn’t enough as the Chaos struggled to find their groove offensively. Brunswick took home the championship in what was a well-played game by both teams.

For the tournament, Riley Strobel had seven hits, including a double, four runs, four RBI and four stolen bases and Hailey Armold had seven hits, including a home run, three doubles, five runs, five RBI and a stolen base.

Hannah Ferrer had six hits, including a triple, a double, four runs, four RBI and a stolen base; Ava Edmond had 5 hits, including a triple, six runs, three RBI, four walks and six stolen bases; Leigha Wiley had four hits, including four doubles, four runs, three RBI, three walks and four stolen bases; Julia Grounds had four hits, including three doubles, four runs, three RBI, one walk and five stolen bases; Emma Holmberg had four hits, including a home run, six runs, two RBI, two walks and two stolen bases.

Also, Skylar Konkle had three hits, three runs, one RBI and a stolen base; Kasey Purdy had three hits, including a double, two runs and a stolen base; Rose Holliday had three hits, three runs, two RBI, a walk and two stolen bases; Aurora Anderson had three hits, two runs and three RBI; Lainey Morrison had three hits, a run, an RBI and a walk; Angelina Van Slyke had one hit and two runs.

Riley Strobel pitched 23 innings, allowing 32 hits and 13 runs (nine earned) with 19 strikeouts and five walks, while compiling a 4-1 record. Leigha Wiley threw five innings, allowing five hits and three runs (one earned) with four strikeouts and two walks.

BASEBALL

Outlaws 15U 14

Upstate 11

The Greene County Outlaws 15U overcame an early eight-run deficit with nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and went on to defeat Upstate Academy, 14-11, in Monday’s travel baseball game at McQuade Park.

Miguel Madera, Shane DeRose and Andrew Sager all had two singles and an RBI for the Outlaws. Marion Kohler and Jake Miller added two singles apiece, Christian Tedford and Sean Scott both had a single and an RBI and Brodie Montgomery and Brady Penet each had an RBI.

Penet, Nate Shook-Timot and Kohler all pitched for the Outlaws, allowing 11 runs and 12 hits with 12 strikeouts and 10 walks.

Outlaws 14U 10

Clippers 14U 3

The Greene County Outlaws 14U plated four runs in the first inning en route to a 10-3 victory over the Columbia Clippers 14U in Monday’s travel baseball game at McQuade Park.

Riley Street led the Outlaws with a double, single and an RBI. Zach Russell and Ty Van Valkenburg each had two singles and an RBI, Sam Launer collected two singles, Zag Wagor singled, Mark Costanzo drove in two runs and Andrew Sager and Alex Slater each drove in a run.

Chase Morrison ripped a two-run homer and a single for the Clippers. Wyatt Dolge contributed two singles and Matt Munro, Hunter Kelly and LJ Morse all singled.

Costanzo went the distance on the mound for the win, striking out six, walking two and allowing three runs and seven hits.
