Most would probably not recognize the phrase “Happy Lupercalia Day” but historians assert that the origins of our favorite candy, flowers and cards holiday can be found in an annual Roman festival called Lupercalia.

Celebrated on Feb. 15  Lupercalia is considered an “early version” of Valentine’s Day due to its connection to fertility. Young men of the time randomly chose a young lady to escort to the festivities, and it can be assumed that love was most likely in the air.
