OUR VIEW Perchance to dream
Posted: March 04, 2015

Everyone suffers from a restless night’s sleep now and then. No real harm done, except for a tired feeling the next day. But chronic sleep loss can dramatically affect your health in ways you might not imagine.

OUR VIEW Eat better, feel better
Posted: March 03, 2015

Healthy eating begins with quality and ends with quantity. For example, tucking into a big salad rich in vitamins and minerals and a bowl of your favorite fruit — apples or strawberries are excellent choices — makes a pretty tasty meal. Plus, it’s all good for you. And you won't feel hungry later.

OUR VIEW Mr. Cole and Mr. Church, together again
Posted: February 28, 2015

They have been discussed as a team in the art world just as Bogie and Bacall, Astaire and Rogers, and Bergman and Ullmann have been inextricably linked in the world of cinema.

Vote against G’town school referendum
Posted: February 26, 2015

So the Germantown school board has approved the superintendent’s ridiculous plans to spend at least $12 million on a new auditorium, etc. in a school district with declining enrollment. No surprise there. The school board does whatever the superintendent asks for. It is now up to the good people of Germantown who actually pay for all of the things she asks for to vote no on March 10.

OUR VIEW Heart of the matter
Posted: February 26, 2015

On average, the human heart typically beats between 60 and 100 times per minute in a normal, healthy adult. And every beat separates a man from eternity.

MY VIEW Show veterans they matter
Posted: February 24, 2015

I find it deplorable that the Chatham school board has NOT passed the veterans’ exemption for school taxes. Other school boards finally passed this exemption and rightfully so. Passing this exemption is a way to honor veterans ALL the time; as they should be.

OUR VIEW Time to banish old pit bull law
Posted: February 21, 2015

History has not helped the case of the pit bull. Created by mixing bulldogs with terriers — for agility and strength — this breed has notoriously been used for blood sports, especially illegal dog fighting in the United States. The breed has gotten a bad rap for being a dangerous dog.

OUR VIEW Breaking the ice
Posted: February 19, 2015

Crews from the U.S. Coast Guard board small vessels known as cutters and make their way north and south on the Hudson River through a thick carpet of ice, breaking open a path for barges to travel round trip from New York City to Albany. Cutters operate up and down the Atlantic seaboard to keep vital river traffic moving in frigid weather.

OUR VIEW Baseball hopes spring eternal
Posted: February 13, 2015

Old Man Winter has been throwing us some wicked sliders over the last three weeks. Greene and Columbia counties are buried under anywhere from 30 to 35 inches of snow. More is on the way and single-digit high temperatures will be the story this weekend.

OUR VIEW Hearts, no flowers
Posted: February 06, 2015

It may not be spring quite yet, but February is also a time when, as Tennyson noted, a young man’s fancy turns to thoughts of love. Stores are filled with giant red hearts reminding everyone that Valentine’s Day is on the way.
