Screenwriter Leora Barish has purchased 20 acres of farmland in 2011 on Fish and Game Road in Hudson to provide a place to train military veterans for careers in sustainable farming and food entrepreneurship.

Barish, who wrote the 1985 screenplay for the motion picture “Desperately Seeking Susan,” starring Madonna, has partnered with the Hawthorne Valley Association and the Farmer Veteran Coalition to create Heroic Food, an organization created to train veterans in farming. Heroic Food’s first farm is Barish’s property on Fish and Game Road.
