Christmas poem put on trial

Just about every American knows the first line of the poem “Account of a visit from St. Nicholas,” first published Dec. 23, 1823 .
“Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring—not even a mouse,” begins the poem, better known to millions as “The Night Before Christmas.”
