Consider all the angles after cancer diagnosis
Posted: December 06, 2014

First as a cancer survivor, I recognize and appreciate the great work our physicians do. Where would we be without them? However, there are two things that get my panties twisted. I’ve talked to women, who when meeting with an oncologist for the first time after being diagnosed with advanced breast cancer, are being told, “I believe in preserving the breast!”

It’s lung cancer month
Posted: November 08, 2014

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. By definition, cancer in itself is when cells grow at an abnormal pace. Normal cells grow and then die off as we grow older; but cancer cells continue to multiply. This is why early diagnosis is so important to take measures to prevent the cancer cells from growing. When this occurs in the lungs it can be extremely dangerous.

It most commonly affects African Americans, Hispanics, young people and those with the BRCA1 gene mutation.

More on clinical trials
Posted: August 02, 2014

Last time I told you about the remarkable, innovative ideas that are being developed to fight cancer. Thanks to Dr. John Beadle, we learned about the Enadenotucirev vaccine used in clinical trials to promote anti-cancer activity in solid tumors in colon, bladder, lung, renal, pancreas and breast. This prompted me to look into other clinical trials and modern advances. The clinical trial conducted at The Mayo Clinic where they are genetically altering the measles vaccine to stop widespread tumors in patients with advanced myeloma is worth a read.

The many types of chemotherapy
Posted: March 29, 2014

We all know about chemotherapy, one of the main treatments for cancers; but did you know that there were different methods of delivering chemotherapy? Cancer Treatment Centers of America does an excellent job describing these different methods. The following important information is taken from their website. HIPEC was particularly interesting to me, because it is one of the treatments used for ovarian cancer. Only a few centers throughout America deliver this form of chemotherapy.

Prostate cancer drug hits market
Posted: March 15, 2014

Remember when we used to hear about miracle drugs for cancer that were in the process of being approved by the FDA? These drugs used to take years and years before they saw the light of day. In the meantime people were literally dying! Well now some drugs are getting approved faster due to an FDA priority review program. Because of this, there is a newly approved drug called Xofigo for men suffering with advanced stage prostate cancer.
