Board votes to fill Mabb’s vacant seat this time

Two weeks after what many believed was a closed issue, the Hudson City School District Board of Education voted to fill the vacant board seat left with the departure of a longtime member.

Jack Mabb, who served eight and a half years on the board, tenured his resignation Nov. 4 in order to serve as Stockport’s new town justice.

During the Nov.12 BOE meeting held at the Hudson Junior High School, the members debated whether to appoint an interim member until the next election on May 18, 2010, or leave the seat empty until that time.

What appeared to be a vote that ended in a stalemate occurred that night, but according to board member Peter Meyer, no formal motion had been made before the vote was taken, nullifying any decision.

“It was an informal show of hands,” asserted Meyer.

Board member Mary Daly disagreed, believing that a motion had been made, but with only the past board minutes to go by, which did not indicate whether a motion had been made, another vote was taken with a different result than two weeks earlier.

Daly had, and continued to be, against replacing Mabb.

She said Monday that it didn’t make sense to bring someone aboard for four months, at which time they would have to run for the position.

Monday’s vote was four to two for appointing a new member, with Daly and board member Patricia Abitabile against.

The board will be taking letters of interest until Dec. 14, which can be dropped off with the district clerk. The interviews will be conducted in public at the Jan. 11 meeting and the board will make its selection that night in executive session.

This is the same model used in October 2007 to appoint Emil Meister — now the board president — and board member Jeff Otty after the departure of Edward Nabozny and John Rutkey Jr.

Both Meister and Otty later were elected to their seats.
