College Hoops: Army holds off Princeton 56-52

PRINCETON, N.J. (AP) — Cleveland Richard scored 18 points and Army held off Princeton 56-52 on Saturday.

The Black Knights (2-1) shot 54.5 percent in the first half (12-for-22) to lead 27-14 at halftime as the Tigers shot only 27.3 percent (6-for-22).

Army took a 41-21 lead on a Marcus Nelson dunk with 14:30 left.

Trailing 50-34, Princeton (2-1) used a 15-2 run, keyed by eight points from Dan Mavraides, to pull within 52-49 with 48 seconds remaining. After Army’s Julian Simmons and Mavraides each made one of two free throw attempts, Army went 3-for-4 from the line. Marcus Schroeder made a layup with 2 seconds left for the Tigers, and teammate Nick Lake missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.


Simmons added 10 points for the Black Knights.

Mavraides led Princeton with 14 points on 4-for-13 shooting and Lake added 10 points and seven rebounds.

Princeton had 27 turnovers while Army had 23.

Buffalo beats Towson 78-69 in OT

TOWSON, Md. (AP) — Rodney Pierce scored 18 points to lead Buffalo to a 78-69 win over Towson in overtime on Saturday.

Pierce shot 7-for-18 from the field for the Bulls (2-1). Calvin Betts added 14 points and 10 rebounds, while John Boyer dished out 12 assists.


Towson (1-1) trailed by seven points with less than 3 minutes remaining in the second half when they went on a 7-0 scoring run to tie the game at 65-all. Troy Franklin’s 3-pointer with 21 seconds remaining capped the Tigers’ spree, and a missed layup by Pierce at the buzzer forced the game into overtime.

In the extra period, though, the Tigers were outscored 13-4, and the Bulls ended the game on a 6-0 run.

Towson was paced by Franklin, who finished with 17 points. Jarrel Smith added 16 points and seven rebounds, while Calvin Lee contributed 15 points and nine rebounds.
