Where are they now?
As the fall athletic seasons come to a close on the high school level this month, so do many college sports seasons. Here is a look at how some local players fared during their fall collegiate athletic endeavors:
— Nick Zapp, Hudson High School, Hobart College Football/Linebacker
Played eight games and had two solo tackles, two assists, one pass deflection and was in on one broken-up pass play. Hobart finished the season with a 6-3 record, including a perfect 4-0 mark at home.
— Felipe Cavalcanti, Ichabod Crane, SUNY Oswego Soccer/Forward
Started 12 of 15 games, scoring six goals on 24 shots with 11 shots on goal. Cavalcanti led Oswego with 24 points and three game-winning goals as the Lakers went 6-10-1 (4-4-1 SUNYAC).
— Stephanie Bednar, Hudson, Central Connecticut State University Golf
Opened the season at the CCSU Shootout where she placed fourth individually with an 83. Bednar scored the lowest front nine score of the day with a 37. In the next three tourneys Bednar placed 22nd (160 score), 24th (178) and 22nd (176).
— Gabe Sturges, Catskill, Union College Cross Country
Earned All-State honors at the NYSCTC Cross Country Championships which was the first time in seven years a cross country athlete was named All-State at Union. He turned in a career-best time of 26:51.15 in the 8K championship race to finish 11th overall. Sturges was selected the New York State Male Rookie of the Year. He also placed fifth at the Mount Saint Mary’s Invitational to lead Union to a second-place finish overall.
— Jared Skliba, Cairo-Durham, Castleton State College Football/Defensive Back
Had two kick returns for 14 yards (11 long). Played six games on defense and had 29 solo tackles with 10 assists. Had 4.5 tackles for a loss of 11 yards. Also had one broken-up pass and two quarterback hurries.
— Shane Brozowski, Rensselaer, Castleton State College Football/Quarterback
Played all nine games at quarterback. Finished the year with a 124.80 passer efficiency rating. Went 151-for-262 passing with nine interceptions. Threw for 1,877 yards with 11 touchdowns and a long gain of 85 yards. Team went 3-6 on the season.
— Parker Niles, Chatham, Union College Football/Defensive Back
Had one kick return for 21 yards as Union went 7-2 (6-0 conference).
— Andrew Knight, Chatham, Union College Soccer/Defense
Played two games and got off one shot on goal as Union went 11-6-2 on the season.
— Mary Donohue, Ichabod Crane, Union College Soccer/Defense
Started 17 out of 18 games played. Had two shot on goal as Union went 11-7 overall.
— Jessica VanAllen, Chatham, SUNY Brockport Soccer/Forward
Started all 16 games and scored nine goals with two assists to lead the team. Got off 69 shots with 30 shots on goal with three game-winners. Also had one penalty kick goal on one attempt as her team went 10-4-3 (5-2-2 conference).
— Nick Papas, Maple Hill, Hudson-Valley Community College Soccer/Goalie
Played goalie for 15 games, giving up 26 goals.
— Joe Van Allen, Ichabod Crane, HVCC Soccer/Forward
Played 16 games with one goal and one assist as the Vikings went 8-6-2 on the season.
— Colin Legge, Maple Hill, HVCC Soccer/Forward
Played in 17 games and scored 22 goals with three assists.
— Jenna Story, Catskill, HVCC Soccer/Midfield
Played 12 games as the Lady Vikings finished the year with a 3-6-3 record.
— Susan Kirwan, Ichabod Crane, HVCC Volleyball
Played in 34 games. Nailed two aces with 21 kills, 50 assists and 32 digs.
— Courtney Schermerhorn, Ichabod Crane, HVCC Volleyball
Played in 35 games. Had 17 kills and three digs on the season.
— Allison Smith, Chatham, HVCC Tennis
Played on the Lady Vikings team that went 1-3 on the season.
— Alyssa Finck, Ichabod Crane, SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey
Started all 19 games. Dished off seven assists and had 27 shots including 18 shots on goal as her team finished the season with a 8-11 record.
— Alyssa Ancin, Maple Hill, RPI Soccer/Midfield
Started four of 17 games. Ended the year with three shots and one shot on goal as RPI went 6-11-1 on the season.
— Taylor Willis, Ichabod Crane, Wheaton Cross Country
Named Academic All-Conference while running on the cross country team as a sophomore. Wheaton placed second out of 19 teams during the Saints Invitational and placed 8th at the NEWMAC Championships.
