There will be a holiday open house at the State Police Barracks on state Route 9 in Livingston from 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 5, and the trooper’s annual toy drive is in desperate need of donations.

The troopers’ traditions of spreading holiday cheer close to home by “adopting” local families has expanded each year.

The effort now benefits a number of local families in Columbia County as well as helping Santa with his annual delivery to the Astor Home for Children in Rhinebeck.

Everyone is welcome to stop by and visit the State Police Zone Headquarters at on Dec.5.

There will be light refreshments and the public is also encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy for distribution to area families in need.

Children will be able to visit with Santa at the open house and he may even arrive by horse-drawn sleigh.

Donations may be dropped off any day during regular business hours until Dec. 16.

After receipt, gifts are sorted according to recipients, wrapped by volunteers and delivered to local needy families and children by Santa himself.

Toys for children between the ages of 6 and 12 are desperately needed, and hand-knit items such as hats, gloves and mittens are much appreciated.

Any financial donations are used to create holiday means which are also delivered to needy families.

Zone Commander Capt. Scott L. Brown and his staff are very gratified that so many people are willing to join with the troopers in this  cause.

Community members have been consistently generous in helping out their less fortunate neighbors and the troopers are looking forward to another successful year.
