VanDuyne charged with rape and imprisonment
By Andrew Amelinckx
A Hudson man on parole was arrested early Tuesday morning and charged with the alleged rape of a 55-year-old woman.
Emerald VanDuyne, 47, was arrested by the Hudson Police Department around 1:50 a.m. Tuesday after authorities received reports of a woman screaming from an apartment on the 300 block of Warren Street in the city.
“It was a good thing a neighbor heard the screaming and called police,” said HPD Lt. Richard Paolino.
He said officers responded quickly and were able to determine the victim’s whereabouts.
According to the police, VanDuyne held the victim against her will, choked and forced her to have intercourse.
She was transported by the Greenport Rescue Squad to Columbia Memorial Hospital.
VanDuyne was arrested and charged with first-degree rape, a Class B felony; second-degree unlawful imprisonment, a Class A misdemeanor; and third-degree menacing, a Class B misdemeanor.
He was arraigned and remanded to the Columbia County Jail without bail.
The case is being investigated by patrol and detective squad members. The state Parole Department also assisted HPD.
This isn’t the first time VanDuyne has been in trouble with the law.
He has served time for the armed robbery of a 78-year-old man and for assaulting a Dollar Store employee.
While on parole he was charged with aggravated harassment for allegedly urinating on a corrections officer.
VanDuyne said he was taking the sleep aid Ambien and was sleepwalking at the time of that incident.
Another charge that he made a bomb threat to the Hudson Police Department was later dropped.
He was currently on parole and wearing an electronic monitoring device.
As a previous felony offender he could be looking at more time if convicted for his current charges.
