Hidden gems

Greenport
The more one learns about the history of Hudson and surrounding communities, the more one wants to share that history. Historic Hudson has helped us to do that in significant ways in recent years. The latest effort was the “Hidden Gems of the Town of Greenport”, the fourth annual Old House Tour. The event would not have been possible without the generous cooperation of those who currently reside in the houses on the tour, and equally generous commitment of time by those who served as docents and house managers at various locations. In addition, a debt of thanks is also owed to John Craig, Mark Gaylord, Dr. Norman Ames Posner, and Gary Wallace’s team.
Members of the committee, which was co-chaired by Peter Bevacqua, were : Jules Anderson, Peggy Anderson, Paul Barrett, Timothy Dunleavy, Phil Forman, James Male, Bob Mechling and Gabe Shaftlein. Their enthusiasm proved that the impulse to share our history was more than simply a whim of a handful of planners. It was something deep in the hearts of the people of the area.
Perhaps the greatest testimony to the spirit of sharing could be found in the review that appeared in the Register-Star section “On the Scene” by John Keeler . His vivid account of the many splendid features of the various sites on the tour made it come alive for those unable to participate in the tour itself, and solidified the experience for those who did.
As a native of the area, and student of history, I wish to express my gratitude to all those who made the tour such a success, including the Register-Star editors and Mr. Keeler, for crystalizing its highlights so well. The tour planners told us what they hoped the tour would provide, but Mr. Keeler’s review told us what the results actually turned out to be.
