KINDERHOOK — With the popularity of combat sports skyrocketing over the past several years, there have been a number of mixed martial arts (MMA) classes sprouting up across the country.

Recently, Hudson native Tom Svingala started teaching an MMA class at Kinderhook Martial Arts and already has a number of interested athletes signing up.

One of the first competitors to enroll in the class is amateur MMA fighter and fellow Hudson native Mike Alessi. Svingala plans on having Alessi fight on Dec. 12 in Vermont.

Svingala got his start in combat sports over seven years ago when he took up boxing and wrestling. Roughly four years ago he took up Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai when one of his son’s instructors urged him to attend a class.

Needless to say, that first class grabbed Svingala’s attention and he eventually earned a purple belt under Henzo Gracie in New York City.

Svingala has fought professionally and holds a spotless 3-0 record in MMA while fighting in California, Las Vegas and Virginia. He plans on taking students to MMA seminars hosted by UFC veterans. One such event is coming up next weekend in Latham, where former lightweight champion Sean Sherk is set to teach.

Svingala stated that the class is for competitors of all levels and expects to begin a kids class shortly.

The new MMA classes are scheduled for every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:45 to 9:15 p.m. and Sundays from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Kinderhook Martial Arts is located on Route 9, near Golden Harvest Farms.
