VALATIE — Ichabod Crane hosted its second annual basketball Midnight Madness Friday for a night of music, food, fun and basketball in the Ichabod Crane High School gymnasium.

The Riders invited friends, family and fans to join them for a pep rally in the “Rider Dome” to kick off the 2009-10 basketball season and to support the Valatie food pantry by donating a nonperishable food item for admission.

Throughout the event tickets were sold for a chicken dinner and hypnotist show that starts tonight at 4 p.m. to raise money for the boys varsity basketball team’s trip to Orlando, Fla. on Dec. 27 where they will compete in the KSA Basketball Tournament. The Riders go up against schools from Florida, Alabama, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Virginia and will be the smallest school in their bracket.

The bleachers were packed to welcome the new season as the ‘madness’ started with a routine by the cheerleading squad to get the crowd hyped up. After the national anthem was played, cheerleaders led the audience in singing the school’s alma mater.

The basketball action began with the introduction of this year’s junior varsity teams, followed by intrasquad scrimmages by both the girls and boys JV team. In between the games, varsity players selected middle school students from the crowd to participate in a shooting competition for prizes.

After another rousing performance by the ICC cheerleaders, it came time to introduce this year’s varsity players. With the lights turned off and strobe lights bouncing off the walls, the teams entered the gym by running through a banner that read “Rock the IC Dome” and went into pregame drills before competing in intrasquad scrimmages of their own.

Tickets for tonight’s event and sponsorship information can be found at the school foyer or by calling 518-542-8907.
