County 911 dispatchers complete active shooter response training

Dispatchers from Columbia County 911 recently completed Active Shooter Response training hosted by the Rotterdam Police Department.

Emergency 911 Dispatchers Lori Bartlett and Frank Martin Jr. attended the eight-hour course held at the Zone 5 Law Enforcement Training Academy in Schenectady.

The training explored the mentality and motivations of the active shooter and prepared dispatchers to handle these situations in a way that minimizes risk to the caller, bystanders and responding law enforcement.

“The active shooter is a unique challenge for us,” Columbia County 911 Director Robert Lopez said. “These situations happen fast and often involve a rapidly changing scenario. It’s critical that dispatchers are able to gather intelligence quickly for our responders, while at the same time be prepared to use tactics and strategies that will protect people on the scene.”

Dispatchers are required to complete 21 hours of continuing education each year.
