Sen. Schumer to speak at rod and gun club

GARRISON — If you would like to question Sen. Chuck Schumer on issues pertaining to hunting, fishing, trapping and the shooting sports, you can do so today at 11:30 a.m.

Although this is short notice, New York’s senior senator has scheduled a press conference regarding legislation for New York’s Venison Donation program at the Garrisons Fish and Game Club, 183 S. Highland Road, Garrison; but since he had his first hunting experience this past weekend in Nebraska, I’m sure he will be open to questions on other issues.

According to politico.com/click/ — the self-described premier destination for news and gossip on D.C.’s social scene — Schumer, at the invitation of Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) spent the day pheasant hunting.

While both he and Nelson are on the extreme ends of the health care debate and other issues, Schumer, who politico.com/click/ reports has never held a shotgun, not only took Nelson up on his invitation, but bagged three pheasants as well.

Apparently the duo had a great time, because later that evening the pair went to the Nebraska-Oklahoma football game.

Along with Sen. Mike Crapo (R-ID), Sen. Nelson (no relation) is the co-chair of the Congressional Sportsman Caucus (CSC), of which Schumer is not a member.

Established in 1989, the CSC was formed to protect the interests of hunters, anglers and trappers. Now comprised of over 253 congressmen and 61 senators, it is the largest caucus on Capital Hill.

These caucus members have indicated by their membership that they are interested in hunting, fishing, and trapping issues and expect to hear from sportsmen when legislation comes before them that impact these activities. They may not always vote favorably on each and every issue, but they respect the data they receive and come to depend on it as a quantitative, reasoned source of information.

Located in Putnam County off Route 9, Garrison is about 11 miles south of Fishkill.
