Association elects officers for 2010

The Riders Mills Historical Association invited the public to the movie premiere of the history of the Riders Mills Schoolhouse recently. The SRO event featured a film that held special importance for the community as well as for the historical association.

A few years ago, Ken Blass, a trustee of the association, president of Blass Communications advertising agency and an Old Chatham resident, had an idea to preserve the memories and experiences of some of the local residents who had either taught or attended the Riders Mills Schoolhouse. Since the schoolhouse ceased operation in the 1950s, few of the students and teachers remained in the area and time was of the essence in collecting these valuable first-hand accounts of life at the schoolhouse.

At Sound Seller Productions, an audio and video production company in western Massachusetts, Emmy award-winning owner and operator Steve Schwartz donated his time and talents to produce the finished 25-minute film, which will be made available to local schools and the New York State Education Department.

Following the premiere, the historical association conducted its annual meeting, voting on the roster of officers for 2010. Patricia A. Dorsey has been elected to serve as a trustee, in addition to her current duties as secretary of the association. Returning officers include Robert G. Leary, president/trustee; Richard J. Dorsey, vice president/trustee; Judith A. Oder, treasurer; and trustees Robert J. Allen, Steven R. Anderson, George N. Biggs, Kenneth L. Blass, William F. Bulick, John B. Carroll and Harlan Root, M.D. John Doyle will continue to serve as curator/historian.

The schoolhouse is located at the corner of Drowne Road and Riders Mills Road off Route 66 in the town of Chatham.
