Conservationist tours beef farm
In an effort to see diverse farming operations around New York, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) State Conservationist Astor Boozer visited Kinderhook Farm, a 300-head grass fed beef, sheep, and poultry farm in Columbia County.
Accompanying him was farm co-owner Georgia Ranney, Columbia County Soil and Water District Executive Director (SWCD) Laura Sager, and Hudson Mohawk Resource Conservation and Development Coordinator (RC&D) Elizabeth Marks. Boozer, who grew up on a ranch in Texas, was an enthusiastic participant of the tour of the 1,200 acre farm by horseback.
Boozer remarked: “A professionally run operation, Kinderhook Farm has utilized available technical assistance to maximize their grazing operation, rotating beef cattle and sheep.”
Kinderhook Farm supplies high quality, grass fed meat to local residents as well as markets in New York City. They are an example of a farm facing challenges of doing business in New York such as high taxes and the high cost of land as well as taking advantage of opportunities like great pasture growing conditions and excellent direct marketing opportunities.
Operations like Kinderhook Farm have participated in several NRCS and Hudson Mohawk RC&D programs to support local agriculture such as conservation programs, livestock grazing education and technical assistance, marketing workshops and the Northeast Livestock Processing Service Company, a project to assist the family farmer with the quality processing and marketing of their animals.
