Alleged stabber walks

A Greenport man who allegedly stabbed someone twice in the back Oct. 30 was released on his own recognizance after neither the victim nor witness showed up for the hearing in Hudson City Court.
Duhamel Johnson,18, assaulted a 29-year-old Hudson man around 11 a.m. Oct. 30 near 233 State St. in the city, according to the Hudson Police Department.
Johnson turned himself in to HPD three hours after the incident and is facing first-degree assault, a Class B felony, and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
The victim was transported by the Greenport Rescue Squad to Columbia Memorial Hospital with two stab wounds in the upper torso. The victim has since been released from the hospital.
According to Columbia County District Attorney Beth Cozzolino, the victim and witness had been subpoenaed to appear in court for the Nov. 4 preliminary hearing in the case and had been reminded as well.
“We will work with the victim, the witness and with the Hudson Police Department to bring this case to the grand jury,” she said.
This isn’t the first time a victim or witness has failed to appear in court.
“A lack of witness cooperation is increasingly becoming more common in our city of Hudson cases,” said Cozzolino.
This past summer, Daniel J. Williams, 28, of Catskill, the man who allegedly shot 22-year-old Rahmel A. Spann of Hudson twice in the thigh had second-degree attempted murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon charges against him dropped after the grand jury failed to indict him.
The shooting allegedly occurred during a dispute on the corner of Second and State streets in Hudson on April 13.
