Halloween rampage in Red Hook

RED HOOK — Details about a man who went on a “Halloween night crime spree” were released for the first time Saturday by the Red Hook Police Department.
Stuart Klein, 22, of Red Hook, is accused of going on a bizarre, hour-long rampage that ended with police chasing the man on foot through a Tivoli neighborhood.
Police Chief James Truitt said a list of charges are still pending. Due to the ongoing investigation, Truitt was not at liberty to divulge the full extent of the crimes committed by Klein, but teased that there are strange details to be released soon.
Around 10:30 p.m. Halloween night, police observed Klein driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed up Broadway in Tivoli in a stolen green 2003 Hummer H2. Tuitt said it was extremely fortunate there were no injuries, given the large holiday crowd of residents and Bard College students in the area.
“There were lots of college students out and about in various states of enjoyment and inebriation, on the sidewalks and crossing the street,” Truitt said, “luckily no one was hurt.”
Klein, who officials say was either intoxicated, or otherwise impaired, was pulled over by police shortly after being observed swerving down the busy street. Klein, who was operating the vehicle with a suspended driver’s license, then provided police with false identification. Before he could be arrested Klein darted away from the large stolen vehicle, leading police on a foot chase through the streets and backyards of Tivoli.
Though Klein was promptly chased down and arrested Truitt said police are still investigating a number of crimes Klein may have committed before law enforcement got wind of the spree. “There’s more to this story,” the chief said, “He did some serious things before he took that car.”
Sources say arson may be one of Klein’s pending charges and investigators are awaiting the results of lab tests before releasing the full details of what Truitt called a one man “crime wave.”
So far, Klein has been charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, misdemeanor resisting arrest, fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, and felony fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property. More charges are expected to be filed in the near future, police said.
Anyone with additional information about the Halloween incident are encouraged to call 845-758-6780.
