Campion honors distinguished vets

Columbia-Greene Community College President James Campion honored distinguished veterans Jack Van Loan and Kenneth Wilber, during his annual awards breakfast Friday at the Greenport campus.
Attendees included state and county government officials and members of the local veterans and business communities as well as college trustees, faculty and staff. They included state Sen. Stephen M. Saland, R-41st; state Assemblyman Marcus Molinaro, R-103rd; and Bill Gannon, chief of staff for Assemblyman Peter Lopez, R-127th.
Wilber has been the Columbia County treasurer since 1995. A lifelong resident of Ghent, he served two years as a town councilman and served as supervisor from 1981 to 1993.
He served on active duty in the U.S. Navy, from February 1966 to November 1969, and was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Wilber is also a life member of Ghent VFW Post 5933, currently serving as quartermaster, and is quartermaster of the Rip Van Winkle Counties Veterans of Foreign Wars.
A life member of the Ghent Volunteer Fire Company, Wilber is also a life member of the Ghent Union Cemetery Association and the Columbia County Agricultural Society as well as a member of the Kinderhook Elks Lodge 2530 and the Columbia County Honor-a-Vet Committee.
He also serves on the board of directors of the Northern Columbia Republican Club, is chairman of the town of Ghent Republican Committee and is a member of the Columbia County Republican Committee.
Van Loan has served as director of the Greene County Veterans Service Agency since 2004. A lifelong Greene County resident who lives in Cairo, Van Loan served in the U.S. Army and was deployed to Vietnam as a rifle platoon leader assigned to the 4th Battalion, 3rd Infantry.
He is a member and service officer of American Legion Post 1416, East Durham. He is also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 770, Catskill, and the Disabled American Veterans Post 186, Cairo, where he is also service officer.
Trustee Emeritus of the Thomas Cole National Historic Site and chairman of its Endowment Foundation, Van Loan is a member of the Greene County Historical Society and its finance committee. He is also the veterans representative on the Greene County Department for the Aging Advisory Council and is a member of the Vietnam Veterans Reunion Association.
The ceremonies also included the presentation of The Marine Sergeant James A. Haggerty Scholarship to C-GCC student Douglas Galioto of Freehold, a member of the Marine Corps. The award was presented by Marine Corps Coordinating Council of New York Capital Region members James A. Haggerty and David Wallingford, who were introduced by C-GCC Director of Development and Alumni Services Joan Koweek.
Campion also recognized veterans from both the college and the community.
