Race for Ancram supervisor too close to call

ANCRAM — A tense campaign ended with Democratic Supervisor Candidate Art Bassin edging ahead with 338 votes to incumbent Republican Supervisor Tom Dias’ 271 votes.

A little more than 100 absentee ballots are left to count, and Bassin said he thought it could go either way.

“It’s not over until the absentee ballots are counted,” he said. “At least in the local election, it looks like I’ve got a small lead. I’m very pleased that I seem to have a small margin after the local election. I’m confident that I’m going to get the majority of the absentee ballots. I’m overall very pleased with the outcome.”

“I congratulate Art Bassin,” said Dias. “He and his team did a good job. There’s some hundred-plus ballots that are going to be counted. I think he’s going to have those in the majority. I can’t say that I’m surprised. I was campaigning in hopes of winning, in hopes my record would speak for itself ... the voters are going to pick who they want. They obviously wanted somebody different.”

Republicans Chris Thomas and incumbent councilwoman Donna Hoyt led the race for town board. Thomas got 344 votes and Hoyt got 305. Democrat Madeline Israel got 288 votes, and incumbent Democratic councilman Bob Mayhew got 244 votes.

Republican James MacArthur won the race for highway superintendent with 380 votes; Bobby Roche, a Democrat, got 153. Keith Morey, running on the Ancram Residential Party ticket, got 78 votes.

“This race in Ancram was so close,” Bassin said. “I think the important point is there are two points of view that are different. The most important thing over the next few years is to bring these points of view together.”

All election results are unofficial, pending routine recanvassing and the counting of absentee ballots.
