Farm to open doors for co-op event

A local dairy farm that’s part of a regional cooperative is opening its doors to the public Sunday along with 30 others from Vermont to Maine.

Jim Davenport owner of Tollgate Farms, with his wife Karen, is a member of Agri-Mark, a cooperative made up of 1,300 members.

“We’re inviting everyone to come out to the farm to find out what farmers do,” he said.

He said the cows would be out in the field and — weather permitting — there would be free hay rides up to Fox Hill.

“On a clear day you can see almost 60 miles,” he said.

They will also be handing out samples of the cooperative’s two brands — Cabot Creamery and McCadam.

Agri-Mark, which began in 1916 as the New England Milk Producers Association, merged with Cabot Creamery in 1992 and later, in 2003, merged with the Chateaugay Cooperative in northern New York and acquired the assets of McCadam.

“It’s the best New York cheddar,” said Davenport of McCadam.

When you buy either of these two brands, said Davenport, you’re directly supporting the farmers that helped produce it.

According to Rachel Greenstein, Agri-Mark’s public relations representative, the cooperative nature of Agri-Mark has kept many of the farmers involved from having to sell to developers.

Davenport has been part of Agri-Mark since 1986.

He’s been awarded the title of Agri-Mark’s top quality producer for 2004, 2007, 2008 and, he said, they just found out they will be receiving the honor once more for 2009.

The award goes to the farmer having maintained the best milk quality record among all 1,300 cooperative members.

Davenport has been in the county since 1988 and began farming in Ancramdale in 1993.

He’s also the vice-president of the Columbia County Farm Bureau board.

Tollgate Farms has 140-acres on which 60 registered Holsteins and Ayrshires are milked.

Davenport is also part of the Hudson Valley Fresh cooperative, which sells its own brand of milk products. He said they will be sampling those products as well.

The event is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. The farm is located at 136 Fox Hill Road in Ancramdale.
