G’town begins Class C field hockey tourney with win over North Warren
No. 3 Germantown 3, No. 6 North Warren 0

GERMANTOWN — Linda Gerlach scored a goal in each half to boost Germantown over No. 6 Warren 3-0 during the opening round of the Section II, Class C field hockey playoffs at Germantown Tuesday.
In the second minute of the game Gerlach netted her first goal assisted by Emilie Vermilyea to give the Lady Clippers an early lead.
Midway through the second half Kim Kreig delivered a pass to Patti Cameron who blasted a shot to the back of the net, and later Cameron assisted Gerlach for a goal with two minutes remaining to solidify the victory.
Lady Clippers sophomore goalkeeper Kasey Redmond posted a shutout in her first career sectional game as she faced six shots and made two saves in the win.
“We are very excited about the win,” said Germantown coach Claire Meyer. “If we play to our full potential I believe we can make it to the finals. We have a very talented group and after graduating eight seniors last year, we pulled up a lot of younger girls who have filled in the gaps nicely.”
North Warren goalie Sarah Erickson made seven saves while facing 11 shots in the loss.
No. 3 Germantown plays either No. 2 Greenwich Saturday at 11 a.m., the site is to determined.
PATROON VOLLEYBALL
Ichabod Crane 3, Taconic Hills 0
VALATIE — Ichabod Crane shut out Taconic Hills 3-0 at home Tuesday to win the Patroon Conference girls varsity volleyball title.
Set scores were 26-24, 25-14 and 25-9.
Ichabod Crane’s Sarah Wheeler had eight service points, 12 kills and one assist; Michaela Schermerhorn had three service points, six kills and two assists; Alyssa Stall had four service points, three kills and 12 assists; and Alicia Razanousky added seven service points and one kill.
“This was a big win for us. It helped secure at least a share of the Patroon title,” said ICC coach Bob Wheeler prior to finding out that Hudson upset Maple Hill Tuesday to give his the Lady Riders sole possession of the league championship. “The girls had an excellent season and hopefully this carries into sectionals.”
The Lady Riders finish the regular season with a 16-2 record and await their sectional seeding, to be handed down on Thursday.

Rensselaer 3, Catskill 1
CATSKILL — Rensselaer topped Catskill 3-1 in a Patroon girls varsity volleyball match Tuesday at Catskill, according to an e-mail from Lady Cats coach Stacy Collier.
Set scores were 22-25, 25-18, 25-14 and 25-7.
Catskill’s Ashley Agosto had seven points, two aces and three kills; Amanda Kent had five points and one ace; Beth Sira had eight points; and Shelby Minshell had four points with an ace.
Catskill’s JV team knocked off Rensselaer 2-1 with set scores of 20-25, 25-22 and 25-10.
The Lady Cats host Taconic Hills today at 5 p.m. in their last match of the regular season.
Greenville 3, Chatham 0
CHATHAM — Greenville shut out Chatham 3-0 to wrap up the Patroon girls varsity volleyball season Tuesday at Chatham as the Lady Panthers honored their senior athletes.
Set scores were 25-15, 27-25 and 28-26.
Chatham’s Megan Pottenburgh had eight service points, one ace, two assists and two digs; Sarah Fowler had seven service points, two aces, two kills and 16 digs; and Phoebe Lasky had three service points and five digs.
“It was our senior night and our seniors played a lot and played very well,” said Chatham coach Linda Colwell. “Overall we had a good season. We started strong, fell a little in the middle and came back strong at the end. Our seniors played very well all year. It was a pleasure to coach them.”
The Lady Panthers (6-11) seniors include Erika Sheerin, Samantha Conte, Fowler, Jenna Fredrick, Lasky and Pottenburgh.
Greenville’s Jen Hicks went 17-for-17 serving with 10 points and 14 kills; Kaycee Williams was 18-for-23 serving with 15 points and 11 assists; and Kacee Womack added 15 digs.
“We struggled a little tonight,” stated Lady Spartans coach Justin Bruce. “There were a number of rotation changes and the girls stepped up when the game was on the line and came through with the win.”
Greenville finishes the regular season with a 13-5 record in the league and the Lady Spartans await the Section II seeding meeting on Thursday to find out who they play in the postseason.

Hudson 3, Maple Hill 2
CASTLETON — Hudson ended Maple Hill’s bid for a Patroon girls varsity volleyball championship Tuesday as the Lady Bluehawks clipped the Lady Wildcats 3-2 at Maple Hill.
Set scores were 22-25, 25-23, 26-24, 16-25 and 25-23.
“I thought the girls picked up their game after last night’s loss to Ichabod Crane,” said Hudson coach Chuck Peters. “This game showed that the girls could get out there and play hard. They shoved the game from the other day off and did the job they needed to do.”
Lady Bluehawks’ Shavonda Cousin had 36 points with 23 kills, 10 service winners and three blocks; Amy Bonville had 21 points with 11 kills and 10 service winners; Emily Gaylord had 10 points with five kills and five service winners; and Cortlyn Jepson added eight points with five kills and three service winners.
“I am really proud of the girls. They are putting everything together and working hard. They really wanted to win it at the end,” added Peters.
Hudson finishes the regular season with a 10-8 (11-9 overall) record and awaits a sectional bid on Thursday for the Class B tourney.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
St. Joe’s 3, Bard College 1
CONNECTICUT — St. Joe’s defeated Bard College 3-1 in women’s college volleyball action Tuesday with set scores of 25-15, 25-18, 13-25 and 25-18.
Bard’s Rachel Van Horn had nine kills and 10 digs; Cara Chalk had nine kills; and Ruth Ashebir added 28 assists in the loss.
Bard (7-15) travels to Rutgers for the last game of season Friday at 7 p.m.

Set scores were 22-25, 25-23, 26-24, 16-25 and 25-23.
