MY VIEW: Town belongs to all residents, not just loud ones

Taghkanic

My name is Eric Rogers, I’m a 24-year resident of the town of Taghkanic. I was recently challenged on whether or not I lived in the town of Taghkanic for my right to vote here.

I am the son of Cheryl Rogers, the town clerk and tax collector in Taghkanic but I am also a registered voter of my own rights and I have the right to voice my opinion! My mother is probably going to be mortified at me being as open as I intend to be in this letter. I was fine with living her quiet, polite lifestyle until my rights were challenged by people who have never even met me!

I was born and raised here and now we have people from New York City, or wherever they come from, moving into town thinking they “need” to change things. Who are these people? Why did they move here if they think we need all kinds of changes to please them? Some live here for three years or less, and think they know how to be a town supervisor, a highway superintendent, collect our taxes, keep our records and so on. I want to know how many years of experience these people have doing this, because I know the people who are in office have a long standing record of reliability, experience and can be counted on to not raise our taxes beyond reach and only when it’s absolutely necessary.

These are not just sit around and do nothing jobs. These jobs require pure dedication to every resident in the town. None of the positions have the pay scales you are accustomed to from where you lived previous to moving into the town of Taghkanic. Please don’t think that the full-time residents will give you a raise to match what you are used to making … there just aren’t the jobs in this area to support higher pay on the backs of the taxpayers.

They say the town buildings are run down and need to be updated, but at town meetings when the subject of updating them has come up, they are all against it or throw in so many monkey wrenches that nothing is allowed to be accomplished. Are you just trying to prolong the fact so that if you get in office, you can update the buildings and make it “look like” you are changing things, when in reality, many changes would have already been complete if it weren’t for your opposition at every turn!

I know the people who are working 24-7 to try and make residents happy! I know for a fact, that the town clerk’s office isn’t supposed to be open all night but I answer calls at 9, sometimes 10 o’clock at night and my mother is always happy to help who ever is calling. I know my mother is computer literate, no matter how many times she is called otherwise. I know she turned down high-speed connection, until cable is available to everyone, only to save the town another expense. The incumbents have support but their voices are being drowned out by opposition and rudeness. I can only hope that the entire town can become united once this election is over. That unity is going to come from both sides bending and compromising to work together for any changes that are needed and to keep the rural character that we all love in our town.

This town belongs to all town of Taghkanic residents! It does not belong to just a few with loud, rude voices! I have my right to vote and I will use it to vote for Row B! From my perspective, the alternatives are too scary and expensive!

" Mr Rogers talks about New York City people coming in and wanting to take over. Well, on the United Taghkanic's website, which is the slate his mother is running on, Town Council candidate Erik Tyree has a phone number with a 917 area code. That sounds like a New York City cell phone number to me!!! Mr Rogers also talks about the opposition as living here for 3 years or less. That too sounds like Erik Tyree.
Mr. Rogers, we pay taxes here like everyone else, whether we live here only on weekends or 365 days a year. We get no discount on our tax bill for being part timers. "
