The Hudson City School District is hosting a “Community Open House” this Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. at both the Hudson Junior High School and the Montgomery C. Smith Intermediate School to showcase the results of the construction that took place over the summer.
“It’s a chance for the community to tour the buildings and talk with teachers and staff,” said Jack Howe, the district’s superintendent.
The new 80,000-square-foot seventh and eighth grade wing, located next to the high school on Harry Howard Avenue in Hudson, boasts 22 classrooms and a Promethean interactive white board in each one.
“Everyone’s been really excited about being in the new building,” said Howe.
The only remaining construction is the entranceway to the high school, he said.
“That should be completed by early November,” said Howe.
The construction of the new wing has allowed for the closing of the Greenport Elementary building, which is more than 70 years old.
M.C. Smith, formerly for grades five through eight, is now the intermediate school for grades three through six.
The district’s taxpayers voted to spend $36,650,000 in 2006 for the project.
Howe said the event affords the district the opportunity to thank the public for allowing it to happen.
The program starts at 1 p.m. in the junior high school gymnasium.
