Taghkanic supervisor
The supervisor seat in the town of Taghkanic has gone unchallenged for many years. This year, Loretta Hoffmann seeks to unseat 22-year incumbent Elizabeth “Betty” Young.
Young, a Republican, has served the townspeople of Taghkanic for 22 years. Throughout this time, she has been “very frugal” with the town’s money and doesn’t believe in spending unnecessarily. Young tells us that the economy and taxes are a top concern of hers and that she proud that from 2007 to now, the tax rate has dropped. She also said the town just doesn’t have it in its budget for a new town hall and cautions against starting expensive projects in a recession.
Hoffmann, an Independence Party candidate, sees a need to address the town’s “crumbling infrastructure” and feels that it can be addressed with careful planning. She would also enlist a committee comprised of residents to research the availability of state and federal grants to help with the expense.
The fight over Alan Wilzig’s plans for his property throughout the years has certainly caused some division in the town. Once the situation is resolved, Hoffmann hopes to bring the townspeople together at community events to begin bridging the divide. Young will accommodate people and their feelings although provided no specifics.
Hoffmann withholds judgment regarding the purchase of the Ockawamick school building as she is not sure if the purchase will save the county money in the long run. Regarding Pine Haven, she said that she can’t see how the county can afford to stay in the nursing home business.
Young, on the other hand, said she abstained from voting on Ockawamick because she “didn’t want to upset the party.” As for Pine Haven, she is very pleased with the subcommittee’s recent recommendation to build a new facility on the present grounds because the county has an obligation to take care of those who need it.
There are two different types of leaders: politicians and statesmen. Mikhail Gorbachev once said "What is the difference between a statesman and a politician?... A statesman does what he believes is best for his country, a politician does what best gets him re-elected." We are disturbed by the notion that Young would prefer to stay in favor with the Republicans rather than take a stand on an issue that will affect generations. Other incumbents have stood by their votes and decisions, even when they are not popular.
Hoffmann says that she will work with Republicans and Democrats. This promise is important on the town level as the Wilzig controversy comes to an end and is needed on the county level as well. Therefore we encourage Taghkanic residents to elect Loretta Hoffmann as their next town supervisor.

" As a long time resident and taxpayer in the Town of Taghkanic, I would like to say a few words on the comment from chewbacca111 on the Register Star's endorsement of Loretta Hoffmann for Taghkanic Town Supervisor. There have been several articles in the local papers regarding Loretta's managerial and supervisory experiences. Maybe chewbacca111 had missed those issues. There have been many past leaders in this country that were unheard of before they decided to take office and have done a fine job. So what that she was unknown three years ago. Loretta Hoffmann has also sent out a variety of mailings these past few months introducing herself. In regards to the ice storm last December. I volunteered in the kitchen during the ice storm, working all day at my job and then going to the shelter to wash dishes at night. One particular night I saw Betty Young, her daughter Carolyn, who is a Town Councilwoman, Richard Skoda, also a Town Councilman and the Town Clerk Cheryl Rogers going into the Town Hall which is right across the street from the shelter for a meeting. They had not visited the shelter thus far. I was shocked that they had left that meeting at the Town Hall and not even had the courtesy to walk across the street to see if anything was needed. That shelter was one of two shelters for the whole county. Maybe they were afraid they would be asked to help out. Loretta has shown she has compassion for people, always willing to help out whenever needed. One thing I have learned in all my years of employment is that you should never be impressed by how long someone has held a job, it's how they DO the job that should impress you. Betty Young has held her position all these years because she has run unopposed. I have attended Town Board meetings in the past and have been appauled by her lack of respect and her rudeness. Thank God that someone has stepped up to the plate to change all that. I am voting for Loretta Hoffmann and hope everyone else does too. "
