A 25-year-old Massachusetts woman was killed on Route 9G Tuesday morning when her car swerved into the oncoming lane, crashing head-on into a tractor trailer.
Helene M. Stril-Rever, of Waltham, was traveling southbound in a silver 2007 Toyota Yaris, just north of Cemetery Road, at 8:41 a.m., when she crossed over the center line, and collided with a 2003 Peterbuilt 18-wheeler truck. The Toyota was thrown into the underbrush beyond the southbound shoulder.
Columbia County Sheriff David Harrison Jr. reports that the accident was partially observed by a Sherrif’s Correctional Transportation Unit, and said that the truck driver, Walter J. Reeves of Freehold made every effort to avoid the collision. Reeves was pulling an empty tank trailer used to transport liquid asphalt for Bowegen Trucking, Inc. of Greenville.
Stril-Rever was pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner Dr. George Davis. Reeves was not injured. Both were wearing seatbelts. There were no other occupants in either vehicle at the time of the accident.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation and an autopsy will be conducted at St. Peters Hospital in Albany Wednesday.
Clermont Fire Company responded to the scene and Germantown Fire Company was requested to assist in closing Route 9G at Round Top Road. Northern Dutchess Paramedics and EMS Coordinator PJ Keeler responded as well.
Along with the coroner and Sheriff Harrison, the Sheriff’s Incident Scene Investigation Unit, Undersheriff James Sweet, Captain David Bartlett Sr/Investigators William Foster and Kevin Skype, Investigator Mark Dunspaugh, Sergeant John DeRocha and Deputy Sheriffs Louis Bray, Toby VanAlstyne and Heath Benansky responded to the scene. ***
