Paying for banking

As the Ancram Town Board agonizes how to meet their budget for 2010, here’s one small money-saving suggestion: bank close to home.

As of Sept. 23, 2009, Ancram taxpayers have reimbursed town supervisor Tom Dias $830.25 in mileage for some 31 trips to the Kinderhook Bank in Greenport.

No one reimburses me to drive to my bank – how about you?


If Ancram’s town supervisor banked at First Niagara Bank in Copake, his reimbursements would have totaled only $196.07 for the same number of trips, saving the town $634.18. Plus, if he banked in Copake (as Ancram’s town tax collector does), most mailed deposits would be received and credited the same day, and the total cost to the town taxpayers could have been only $13.64 to date for stamps, a savings of $816.61 this year.

If it were your money, would you spend it this way? Well, hey, if you live in Ancram, it is your money, and you are spending it this way.

Last November, town residents suggested Tom bank in Copake to save money. And his answer was…?
