Greenport supervisor
Republican Patrick Nolan and Democrat Edward Nabozny are going head-to-head in the only competitive race for supervisor that does not involve an incumbent. The two are vying to take over the top spot in Greenport, which became vacant when John Rutkey decided not to seek re-election.
Nabozny has served more than 15 years on the Hudson City School District’s Board of Education. He believes among the top issues that face the town include traffic, taxes and development.
Greenport needs a seat at the table when it comes to rerouting truck traffic in Hudson as any changes will affect the town. He also said that Route 9 traffic and Joslen Boulevard need to be addressed. As for taxes, Nabozny would seek a bigger piece of the sales tax pie from the county. Also on the subject of taxes, he would look at the ways towns could share services and grant opportunities to keep taxes down.
The future of the town’s development also concerns Nabozny. He would like to see more Town Board involvement in the planning process and the decades-old comprehensive plan dusted off and looked at to see if it is being followed. A need to update the plan might come to light and Nabozny is ready to look at that.
Nolan said his present and past employment as a wastewater treatment plant operator gives him an edge as he has worked with a variety of town and village leaders. He would model his leadership after the best of all of their qualities.
Naturally, one of Nolan’s concerns is infrastructure including water and sewer lines, drainage and sidewalks. He would improve the long-term planning for improvements and projects and keep as much of the work as possible “in-house”.
Nolan has a vision of a place for seniors and youth alike. He would like to see a multi-use building constructed at either the Town Park site or near Town Hall.
He also sees the Route 9 corridor and Joslen Boulevard traffic as issues that need to be addressed. Nolan would apply pressure on Assemblyman Marc Molinaro and state Sen. Stephen Saland to get the construction going on Route 9 and theorizes this will alleviate the Joslen problems.
We feel Nabozny has the edge in this contest. His vision for the town is clear and he hopes that he can move the town in the right direction. He wants to make an impact on his community, including making it more pedestrian friendly and getting more residents involved in the town’s future. We endorsed Nabozny in his last bid and are pleased to do so again. Voters should elect Nabozny.
