Two vie for Greenport super seat

Nolan: Upgrade infrastructure, address traffic on Fairview, Joslen

Patrick Nolan, a Republican endorsed by the Working Families Party, may be a political neophyte, but has had 12 years of experience within town government.

He was the waste water treatment operator for Greenport for nearly a decade and continues to do that job for the village of Catskill.

According to Nolan, his career would help him as supervisor.

“I know I have the skill set,” he said, mentioning both problem solving and dealing with budgets as something that would carry over from his work to his role as supervisor.

“When a water line breaks and a part of the town is out of water,” he said, “you have to solve the problem and get everyone’s water back as quickly as possible.”

Nolan believes that there are a number of areas of need in the town of Greenport. These include infrastructure—water and sewer lines, drainage, and roads and sidewalks.

“I propose to improve long range planning of infrastructure projects,” he stated.

Additionally, he said he would search for grant money and complete as many projects as possible with the town workforce, instead of spending money by bidding out contracts to outside contractors.

He also feels strongly about creating a place for both seniors and the town’s youth.

Nolan would like to see a multi-use facility built either at the town park or on the town hall property.

“Something everybody could use,” he said.

He suggested the work be done by town workers or volunteers.

“There’s a lot of talent in Greenport.”

He said that the building could be used as a space for seniors to get together.

“They don’t have their own space,”  he said.

But before starting the project, he said, he would get community input.

“First I’d find out exactly what the seniors want,” said Nolan. “I’m not going to build something and hope they come.”

He hopes there might be programs there including meals for senior, chess tournaments and a book club, to name a few.

Another area of concern for Nolan is the Route 9 corridor and Joslen Boulevard.

He feels the town needs to address the traffic issues that have come with the development of the Fairview Ave-Route 9 corridor.

“It is imperative that the DOT be contacted and brought into the process of developing Route 9,” he stated.

He said that the county’s state legislators, Assemblyman Marcus Molinaro, R,C,I—Red Hook and Sen. Stephen Saland, R,C,I—Poughkeepsie, need to brought in to help persuade the DOT to begin expansion of the road.

“The town has to be more aggressive,” he said, adding that he would be more aggressive than the current supervisor, John Rutkey.

On the county level, Nolan feels that the purchase of the Ockawamick school by the county last year was a bad idea.

“They’re using it for storage right now,” he said. “The county put the cart before the horse.”

He said that the Department of Social Services should remain in Hudson.

“Staying in Hudson is a better option than Ockawamick,” he said.

The county’s original plan to move Pine Haven, the county run nursing home in Philmont, to Valatie was another problem, he said.

“They should have done their homework.

“It never should have left the committee.”

Nolan has lived in the county for 34 years, moving here from Albany. He went to high school at Ichabod Crane and college at Hudson Valley Community College.

He’s a member of the J. W. Hoysradt Hose Company number 8, as well as being a social member of Greenport Fire Department Station number 1, Hudson Elks Club and the Hudson Fish and Game Club.

“I feel I can do some good for Greenport.”
