Ancram supervisor
Voters have a choice between incumbent GOP Ancram Supervisor Tom Dias, 60, or Arthur Bassin, 65, Democrat, who we believe is the best choice.
Bassin chairs the town Comprehensive Plan Committee, a position he holds proudly and speaks enthusiastically about the last two years and the support residents have shown during recent public hearings. He said he believes the plan should be adopted promptly, the opposite opinion of Dias who has been sitting on the comp plan and waiting for zoning issues to be resolved.
Bassin also chairs the community development block grant and farmland protection committees.
Both candidates list the need to build a new highway garage as a top priority and say they would create a long-term plan for replacing obsolete highway equipment. Bassin recommends a five-year plan for equipment upgrades and recommends the current site for a brand new garage.
Both candidates also expressed reluctance in seeking a 100 percent property revaluation, wisely requesting further information on the process.
Bassin speaks knowledgeably about the issues, stressing better financial discipline and control in town government, promising that if elected he would improve the town’s financial disciplines and regularly review and explain the numbers at monthly meetings. Dias, a fiscal conservative, says he would work to keep expenses and taxes under control while continuing to spend taxpayer money wisely, but we believe Bassin may do a better job articulating financial statements to the town board.
Bassin said the town leaders should work to promote unity, a sense of “us,” saying that if elected he would work toward easing tension between leaders and residents and encourage open mindedness and consensus — not contention.
While Bassin admits he doesn’t have a firm grasp of county-level issues, we appreciate his honesty and believe he is articulate, smart and would make a fast learner.
We recommend Ancram voters cast their ballot for Bassin on Election Day.

" I cannot agree with your choice and I think the voters should closely examine what Mr. Bassin intends with several of the grants he has been backing.
Many of them require matching funds which he proposes coming from our tax base. the applications fees are in the thousands of dollars and there is no guarantee that we will be approved.
If you are concerned with rising taxes in Ancram you should support Tom Dias and the Republican team. "
