Another abduction tip

In the midst of a number of attempted abductions in the area, another reported incident occurred recently.
A 13-year-old girl was approached by a driver while she stood in front of the Mobil Xtra-Mart at the intersection of West Market Street and South Broadway in Red Hook Oct. 8.
The man asked the girl how to get to Millbrook.
The girl yelled and ran across the intersection into a nearby business.
“She wisely didn’t wait around to see what his next question was going to be,” said Red Hook Police Chief James Truitt.
The Chief said he felt that the man was acting suspiciously.
“Guys don’t usually like to ask anyone for directions,” he said, adding that the average person wouldn’t ask a 13-year-old how to get somewhere.
The suspect was described as being in his forties, with light or grayish hair, balding in the front, with a close-cut beard and mustache. He was driving a dark-blue four-door vehicle, possibly a Subaru, with a silver stripe down the side. The driver was last seen headed east on state Route 199.
Truitt said the girl was aware of a recent report of a similar event in Millbrook, which may be related.
In that incident, which occurred Sept. 30, two Middle School students were approached by a man driving a silver SUV on Franklin Avenue in Millbrook.
He too was asking directions. The man said he was trying to get to either Red Hook or Poughkeepsie and asked the two children to get into his vehicle to show him the way.
The two ran from the man, who has been described as in his forties with thinning hair and glasses.
The New York State Police are investigating.
Last month in the town of Poughkeepsie another attempted abduction occurred, this time involving a 16-year-old girl who was approached by a man in his forties, who wore glasses and had a goatee. He was driving a large white work van with tinted windows on the passenger side, rust over the rear wheels, and a round bubble window in the rear.
The suspects’ descriptions are somewhat similar in these cases, as well as in two others in Columbia County.
In Columbia County an 11-year-old girl in Philmont was approached Oct. 7 while walking on Eagle Street in Philmont around 7 a.m. A man in a white pickup truck began following her, eventually pulling over to ask the girl whether she had missed the bus and needed a ride.
The girl ran home and reported the incident to her father, said authorities.
The Sheriff’s Office believes this incident may be related to another incident involving a girl who was approached by a man in a different part of Philmont. She also ran from the man.
The suspect has been described as a thin white man, around 30-years-old, with a tan complexion, short brown crewcut and “a full brownish beard trimmed short.” He may also have a silver hoop in his left ear.
Authorities said the truck was last seen speeding away from the area at a high rate of speed towards county route 11.
In two earlier cases, one in Stockport and one in Albany, a green colored truck was described by both victims.
On Sept. 30 a 14-year-old boy was walking on West Ghent Road when he was approached by an older white male with white hair who asked him to come over. The boy ran to a friend’s house.
The next day a similar incident occurred in Albany when a 10-year-old girl walking home from school was approached by two men in a green pick-up telling her to get into the vehicle, which she refused to do, said authorities.
Anyone with information about the recent incident in Red Hook or who may have experienced a similar incident is asked to call the Red Hook Police Department at (845) 758-4710.
