Life in Columbia County has a charm all its own. Those lucky enough to have been born here and all the rest of us that have made this place home can easily get a sense of our being insulated from the rest of the world as we go about our daily lives. Here, what happens on Main Street seems to be more important than what happens on Wall Street. I think part of this bliss is the large degree of community mindedness that exists here; neighbors trying to help one another. Perhaps this attitude is a carry-over from a more agrarian society and organizations like the Grange and 4H, but our citizens seem to have figured out that it is in everyone’s best interest for each of us to be an active part of the community.
Witness the volunteer fire service here in Columbia County. Every single structure and open field in this county is protected from fire by members of the community, all of them volunteers. From a hunting cabin in Austerlitz to a store full of antiques on Warren Street, NONE of the people who show up to put out the flames is paid.
That is community spirit defined.
Many of these local fire houses have fundraisers of different description and I would urge all residents to do their part and contribute. On Sunday, Oct. 11, it’s East Chatham’s turn to raise some funds. The East Chatham Fire Company will be hosting a Buffet Breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m., featuring pancakes, blueberry pancakes, real scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hash brown potatoes (our chief’s secret recipe), corn beef hash and of course our firehouse coffee.
So, come out and help us help you. Where else can you make a contribution knowing that 100 percent of it goes to the people who can put to work, protecting the community you live in? And by the way, you won’t have to cook OR clean the dishes!
