Editorial — Keeping you informed

This week was National Newspaper Week, which is a good time to reflect on the role of a community newspaper.

Mark Twain once said, “Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated,” and the same can be said for newspapers. When radio first entered American households, it was thought that was the end of newspapers. The same was said when televisions ended up in every home. Then the Internet revolution happened and still more people predicted the end of the newspaper. And yet, here we are still.

You may be asking yourself how? The easy answer is because residents still care and want to know what is going on in their communities. And this is information you just can’t get any place else. You can find out the latest celebrity happenings pretty much anywhere, but what about the news that has a direct impact on your life?

Did you just welcome a new member to your family? This newspaper will help you share your joy. Did your daughter just get married? We can help you share how beautiful she looked in the perfect dress. Is it true that your taxes are going up? We’ll let you know. Think your elected officials aren’t doing their job? We provide you with an outlet to express your frustration. Did a friend or neighbor lose a loved one? We let you know when the services are or where to send a memorial contribution.

Let’s not forget local businesses. We unite them with their customers. The ads they place in our publication can’t get skipped over by TiVos and VCRs nor do they scream at you like radio ads. And the advertiser has to hope that their target customer is listening to that particular radio station at that particular time. And we mustn’t forget about satellite radio, which has grown in prominence on a pledge of few, if any, commercials.

We strive to have something for everyone in our pages. You may not love all of our comics, but you do have your favorites. Perhaps you’re a crossword fanatic but don’t care for the cryptoquote. Love sports but have a child on the local football team? Then you’re probably more into the local roundup than the national coverage.

We work to stay on top of a story and provide you continuing coverage of all the angles.

Sure, the news stations might come to town when there’s a sensational court case, but we inform you of the rash of vandalism that occurred in your neighborhood. We are happy to help when one of our neighbors is experiencing a time of need, whether it is because they’ve lost their home in a fire or are suffering from a health ailment.

We work to shine a light on what your elected officials are doing while you are busy living your lives.

The bottom line is: We are here to help you stay informed. Because where else are you going to find out when sign-ups for sports teams are, what is happening in your schools, learn about a new community group that piques your interest and so much more? “Your neighborhood, your news” is more than a slogan. It’s a promise.
