GHENT — A four-vehicle accident on Route 66 in Ghent Saturday, Oct. 3 sent seven people to the hospital, three to Albany Medical Center (two by helicopter) and four to Columbia Memorial Hospital. The accident closed a section of the highly trafficked road for hours, redirecting traffic onto County Route 9.
Close to 4 p.m., two black sedans, a 1992 Buick Road Master, driven by Peggy Alt, 56, of Philmont, and a 2004 Nissan Maxima, driven by Alicia Mitchell, 34, of Hudson, were stopped in the southbound lane of Route 66 behind a 1969 Chevrolet pickup truck, driven by 55-year-old Herbert Carr of Columbiaville, who was waiting for northbound traffic to clear before turning into the Brook Cove Marina, according to a press release from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
As the truck began to turn, a 1999 Chevrolet flatbed tow truck, driven by 19-year-old Adam Moon of Ghent, who was traveling in the southbound lane, failed to stop and slammed into the back of the Nissan, causing a chain reaction. The Nissan was pushed into the Buick, which then clipped the rear of the turning pickup truck.
The Nissan was inflicted with extensive damage, causing rescue workers to have to use the Jaws of Life to extricate the victims.
Passengers in Mitchell’s Nissan were Agnes Brown, 65, of Catskill, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, and back seat passengers Francis Heath, 66, and Gloria Ford, 69, both of Catskill. Brown and Heath were both airlifted to Albany Medical Center with serious injuries, while Ford was transported to Albany Med by Valatie Rescue Squad for back and neck injuries. Mitchell, who had possible internal injuries, was transported by Greenport Rescue Squad to Columbia Memorial Hospital.
Alt, who was alone in her car, was transported by ambulance to Columbia Memorial Hospital, where she was treated and released.
Carr and his 39-year-old passenger, Vernea Dennis of Hudson, were also taken to CMH by ambulance. Carr complained of back and neck pain and Dennis complained of shoulder and arm injury.
The Sheriff’s Office reported that all front seat occupants of the vehicles were wearing seat belts.
First responders to the scene were the Chatham Rescue Squad Emergency Command, followed by the Ghent and Chatham fire departments. Chatham declared a mass casualty incident and Chatham, Greenport and Valatie Rescue squads were called in to transport the victims. Emergency Management Systems Coordinator P.J. Keeler was also on scene.
Deputy Sheriff David Rose was first dispatched to the scene, followed by Captain David P. Bartlett, Deputy Sheriff Heath Benansky and Deputy Sheriff’s Wendy Gunter and Brendan Filli with the Sheriff’s Incident Scene Investigation Unit, as well as Sheriff’s Investigator John Rivero.
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by members of the New York State Police and the village of Chatham Police Department.
Columbia County Sheriff David W. Harrison Jr. said the investigation is continuing and charges are pending, stated the press release.
