Lady ’Hawks blank Cats 3-0

HUDSON — Catherine Sundheim scored two goals to lead the Lady Bluehawks to a 3-0 victory over Catskill Tuesday in Patroon Conference girls varsity soccer action at Hudson.

Sundheim scored once in each half and teammate Hailey Hollenbeck added a goal in the second half to cap the scoring. Anna Barzanti and Jenna Turner each had an assist in the win.

“We dominated the entire game,” said Hudson coach Karrie Cox. “The girls moved the ball around well and had lots of great shots. Meghan Baxter, for Catskill, had a phenomenal game in the goal.”

Baxter grabbed 28 saves in the net for the Lady Cats while her teammates got off one shot on goal. Hudson had 35 shots on goal and one save.


In JV action, Catskill defeated Hudson 5-3 Tuesday.

Hudson (2-7) hosts Ichabod Crane as Catskill (0-10) hosts Cairo-Durham Thursday at 4 p.m.

Ichabod Crane 8, Cairo-Durham 1

VALATIE — Alex Armstrong and Morgan VanAlstyne drove Ichabod Crane over Cairo-Durham 8-1 in a Patroon girls varsity soccer match Tuesday at ICC.

Armstrong had two goals and an assist, VanAlstyne had two goals, Jessie Mink added a goal and an assist, Cassidy Lester had a goal and an assist, Juliana Sacco had a goal, Rebecca Dagget scored a goal, Shayna Barry added three assists and Mariela Jacome had an assist.


Nicole Zacchio scored the lone goal of the day for Cairo-Durham.

“It was a good win. A lot of people got in the game and we were able to work on some things that needed improvement. The girls came out and controlled the pace of the game and everyone played very well,” said ICC coach Tracy Nytransky.

Ichabod Crane’s Alicia Mink had one save in the net and Zoey Leary grabbed two saves. Lady Mustangs’ Samantha Lorenz had 12 saves in goal.

ICC (8-1-1) visits Hudson as Cairo-Durham travels to Catskill Thursday at 4 p.m.

Maple Hill 5, Greenville 0

CASTLETON — Ashley Cross netted three goals as Maple Hill shut out Greenville 5-0 in Patroon girls varsity soccer action at Maple Hill Tuesday.

Maple Hill’s Sierra Legge scored a goal in each half and Cross netted two in the first and one in the final frame along the way to the victory.

“Erica Hamilton did a great job keeping Meegan Arno quiet, but we couldn’t take away the middle of the field early on and gave up a few quick ones,” said Greenville coach Eileen Kiefer. “We had some great scoring opportunities and couldn’t capitalize, but Lydia Smith and Lauren Finch played hard on defense and all of my girls hustled to the end.”

Maple Hill outshot Greenville 19-10 and Lady Spartans’ Abigail McQuillen made 13 saves on the day.

Greenville (6-3-1) travels to Chatham (6-3) Thursday at 4 p.m.

Chatham 4, Taconic Hills 0

CRARYVILLE — Chatham went on the road to shut out Taconic Hills 4-0 in a Patroon girls varsity soccer match Tuesday night at TH, according to e-mails from Lady Panthers coach David Chrapowitzky and Lady Titans coach Brian Yorck.

Chatham’s Alyssa Keeler, Regina Behn, Abby Wheeler and Danielle Carizales each scored one goal on the day as teammate Caily Nieto had two assists and Caroline Connor added one assist.

Chatham got off 32 shots on goal while Brittany Lossow saved three balls from entering the goal.

Taconic Hills had four shots on goal as Jeanine Ham grabbed 27 saves in the net.

“It was an exciting, well-played first half of soccer, but after we lost our center defender late in the half to injury we just couldn’t adjust. We stayed in the game because of the great effort our ’keeper Jeanine Ham made. She played an outstanding game,” Yorck stated.

Taconic Hills travels to Coxsackie-Athens as Chatham hosts Greenville Thursday at 4 p.m.

CHVL GIRLS SOCCER

Waterford 2, New Lebanon 1

LEBANON — Waterford improved to 8-0-2 after they nipped New Lebanon 2-1 during CHVL girls varsity soccer action at New Lebanon Monday, according to an e-mail from New Lebanon coach Kelly Magin.

Geneva Furlano netted a goal assisted by Sara Magin for the Lady Tigers in the first half, but Waterford’s Jackie Sorensen and Jen Hines both scored goals and Cassie Storm added an assist in the half to take the lead.

Waterford’s Shannon Hastings made eight saves while Lady Tigers’ Savanna Wood made two saves and Lauren Sears grabbed one.

New Lebanon (3-6-1) travels to Loudonville Christian Tuesday at 4 p.m.

In CHVL boys varsity soccer action, Waterford snuck by Berlin 1-0 in double overtime Tuesday at Berlin.

PATROON VOLLEYBALL

Ichabod Crane 3, Coxsackie-Athens 0

COXSACKIE — Ichabod Crane downed Coxsackie-Athens in straight games Tuesday by scores of 25-10, 25-9 and 25-15 during Patroon Conference girls varsity volleyball play at C-A.

Lady Riders’ Sarah Wheeler had 12 service points with eight kills; Monica Hall had 11 service points with three kills; Alyssa Stall had four service points with four kills and nine assists; and Shelby Hamilton added six assists.

“Everyone tonight contributed, one way or another. It was a well-played game by the entire team,” said ICC coach Bob Wheeler.

For the Lady Indians, Regina Peterson had one ace, seven digs and two kills; and Nicole Irwin, Shannon Friel, Nicole Kingsley and Sarah Cornwell chipped in with two kills each.

“There’s no doubt we’re in a transition type season,” said C-A coach Dave Carlson. “But amazingly the girls spirits are up and are confident they can win.”

Ichabod Crane (9-2) travels to Catskill while Coxsackie-Athens (0-11) hosts Maple Hill Thursday at 5 p.m.

Rensselaer 3, Greenville 0

GREENVILLE — Rensselaer upended Greenville in straight games Tuesday during Patroon varsity girls volleyball action at Greenville by scores of 25-19, 25-22 and 25-18.

“Rensselaer did a nice job setting up their hitters,” said Greenville coach Justin Bruce. “We battled hard but Rensselaer did a better job at finding the open spots.”

For the Lady Spartans, Makayla Warren and Addie Ferrer were both 10-for-11 serving with five points each; Kacee Womack chipped in with 16 digs; and Jennifer Hicks had 12 kills in the loss.

Greenville (9-2 league, 9-4 overall) hosts Taconic Hills (2-8) Thursday at 5 p.m.

Hudson 3, Catskill 1

HUDSON — Hudson defeated Catskill 3-1 in a Patroon girls varsity volleyball match Tuesday at Hudson, according to an e-mail from Catskill coach Stacy Collier.

Set scores were 25-12, 25-23, 13-25 and 25-12.

Catskill’s Ashley Agosto had eight points, three kills and one save; Sierra Rocco had 13 points, nine kills and two blocks; Emily Winans had four points and two kills; Katie Brown had eight points, one kill and five assists; and Amanda Kent added five points with 10 assists.

“Catskill lost its starting setter Beth Sira in the first game, but (we) fought hard to fill the gap with persistent covering and communication,” stated Collier.

Catskill’s JV team beat Hudson 2-0 (25-14, 25-15).

The Lady Bluehawks travel to Rensselaer while Catskill hosts Ichabod Crane Thursday at 5 p.m.

Chatham 3, Taconic Hills 1

CHATHAM — Chatham topped Taconic Hills 3-1 in Patroon girls varsity volleyball action Tuesday with set scores of 25-18, 22-25, 25-17 and 25-20.

Chatham’s Alyssa Mantell had six service points, two aces, 15 assists, five kills and six digs; Katlyn Strobel had 14 service points, two aces, four kills and 14 digs; and Geena Eglin added 10 service points, three aces, eight assists, six kills and 14 digs.

“It was a good match. Taconic Hills played very scrappy and got to a lot of our balls. We served well tonight and found a way to win,” said Chatham coach Linda Colwell.

Chatham (6-5, 5-5) hosts Coxsackie-Athens while Taconic Hills visits Greenville Thursday at 5 p.m.

Maple Hill 3, Cairo-Durham 0

CAIRO — Maple Hill beat Cairo-Durham in straight games by scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 29-27 Tuesday during Patroon girls varsity volleyball action at C-D, according to an e-mail from C-D coach Kristina Westfall.

For the Lady Mustangs, Kelly Tirpak had seven kills, five aces and eight digs; Justina Rilang chipped in with five aces, six assists and 15 digs; Heather Knichel finished with two aces, five kills and three blocks; and Liz Aprea added 12 digs and three kills.

Cairo-Durham (3-7) travels to Chatham (4-5) while Maple Hill (9-2) heads to Coxsackie-Athens (0-11, 0-11) Thursday at 5 p.m.

CLASS B TENNIS

Catholic Central 4, Catskill 3

CATSKILL — Catholic Central slipped past Catskill 4-3 during Section Two, Class B varsity tennis sectionals at Catskill Tuesday.

“We got nipped in the bud at the finish line,” said Catskill coach Jim Guldenstern. “There are plenty of quality excuses that I could submit about field trips, injuries and chemistry but the truth of the matter is that today Catholic Central was a deeper team than we were. I wish them well in the next round and I thank all of my players for a wonderful season.”

Catskill ends its season with an overall record of 10-5.

RENSSELAER — Rensselaer defeated Hudson 5-1 Tuesday in a Patroon Conference girls varsity tennis match at Rensselaer, according to an e-mail from Hudson coach Rocco Porreca.

“Rochelle Lentz and Heather Callaway really stepped up today and came away with a big victory,” stated Porreca. “Jayne Anderson played her best match of the year and came up just short. It has been a great season, everyone worked hard and really improved. I couldn’t ask for a better group of girls.”

ICC’s Derek Fenoff had three goals and two assists, Seth Scarano scored two goals and had two assists, Justin Verbraska had a goal and an assist, Alex Nieman had a goal and Jesus Gomez had an assist. The Riders got off 28 shots on goal with six corner kicks and had four saves in the net. ICC (10-1, 8-1) travels to Chatham Friday at 4 p.m.
