GHENT — A four vehicle accident on Route 66 in Ghent sent seven people to the hospital Saturday, one by Life-Net Helicopter with internal injuries, and closed a section of the highly trafficked road for hours.
Around 3:30 p.m. two black sedans, a Ford and a Nissan, were stopped in the southbound lane of Route 66 waiting for a white pickup truck to turn into a driveway on the left side of the roadway, police said. As the truck began to turn a southbound flatbed tow truck did not stop and slammed into the back of the Nissan, causing a chain reaction. The Nissan was pushed into the older model black Ford which then clipped the rear of the turning pickup.
The Nissan was inflicted with extensive damage, causing rescue workers to have to use the jaws-of-life to extricate the victims. The airlifted victim was one of the occupants of the crushed Nissan.
The first responders to the scene were the Chatham Rescue Squad Emergency Command, and the Ghent and Chatham Fire Departments. Chatham declared a mass casualty incident and Philmont, Greenport and Valatie Rescue Squads were called in to transport the other six victims. Emergency Management Systems Coordinator P.J. Kealer was also on the scene.
The Sheriff’s office was assisted by New York State Police of Livingston.
Five of the victims were sent to Columbia Memorial in Hudson and two were sent to Albany Medical Center, including the Life-Net evacuated patient. Details about the identities, or the severity of the injuries, of those involved in the crash are not yet available.
The accident was still under investigation by the Columbia County Sheriffs Office late Saturday and full details were not available.
