Great turnout
Robert G. Desmond
Tivoli
Well over 100 voters turned out for the recent Clermont Republican caucus. This was more than double the average attendance of recent years, resulting in standing room only. More than half were forced to stand for the entire time.
I want to congratulate all who took time out of their busy schedules to participate in the American electoral process at its most basic level.
The attendees included a woman in her 90s who had never been to a caucus before; a couple who had family visiting, but unselfishly took time out to participate; a man who encouraged his newly registered daughters to attend and see how the process works at the grass roots level; and many others whose stories and sacrifice are known only to themselves and The Almighty.
The next step is a vigorous campaign and hopefully the candidates will focus on the issues and avoid personal attacks. Once the campaign is over and the election results are tallied, let’s all pledge to put aside the partisan politics and personal vendetta that have characterized the past several years.
It’s time to restore a spirit of civility and respect to Clermont Town Board meetings and concentrate on the people’s business regardless of party affiliation.
