Guns vs. Hoses Softball Benefit

The 4th Annual Guns vs. Hoses Benefit Softball Game takes place today at Elliott Park in Catskill. The Catskill Police Department takes on the Catskill Fire Department with all proceeds going to the Westchester Medical Center Burn Center.

There will be food and refreshments for sale and raffle tickets will be sold. Prizes include FDNY apparel, Valley Cats tickets and a grand prize laptop donated by the Catskill Wal-Mart.


The game will commence at 4 p.m. In the event of bad weather, the game will be rescheduled for Sunday.

Personal Safety Workshop Offered in Kinderhook

The Kinderhook Runners Club, the Kinderhook Memorial Library, the Town of Stuyvesant and the Village of Kinderhook have developed a workshop entitled “Personal Safety for People Who Walk, Run, and Bike Alone.” The workshop will be offered today from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Stuyvesant Town Hall (Route 26A, Stuyvesant) and again on Oct. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. on the second floor of the Kinderhook Village Hall (6 Chatham Street, Kinderhook).

The workshop will address how to stay safe while exercising outside, self-defense techniques and equipment, tips for road safety and perspectives and advice from local athletes.

Attendees should wear comfortable clothing to the workshops. This free program is open to the public. For more information call the Kinderhook Memorial Library at 758-6192 or visit its Web site at www.oklibrary.org/.

Runners, Walkers Sought for Louis P. Garafalo 5K


Runners and walkers of all types and abilities are being sought for today’s Louis P. Garafalo 5K.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Stottville Volunteer Fire Co.’s First Responder Program. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Stottville Fire House on Atlantic Avenue. The race and walk begin at 11:30 a.m.

Registration costs $12 and can be done the day of the race or in advance by contacting a fire company member.

Anyone seeking more information should contact race organizer Mary Garafalo 828-2416. She is the daughter-in-law of longtime local sporting enthusiast and supporter, Louis Garafalo, for whom the race is named after.

Col. Co. Sons and Daughters of Italy Golf Tourney

The Columbia County Sons and Daughters of Italy #659 will kick off Italian-American month on Oct. 2 hosting the 12th Annual John V. Florio Sr. Columbia County Sons and Daughters of Italy #659 Golf Tournament. The event will be held at Copake Country Club on Copake Lake.

The lodge will accept sponsors for each hole for only $60 per hole. A $150 contribution will place one ad at a tee box and pay for one person to play. 

Please contact Phil Abitabile 828-1250 or 965-6439 if you would like to play, sponsor a hole or donate a gift for the raffle. Deadline for reservations and payment is Monday.

The day starts at the lodge at 9 a.m. with sign-ups and breakfast. Tee time is 10:30 a.m. with refreshments and food on the course. The day ends with a dinner and awarding of prizes at the Italian lodge. Total cost for the day is $100 per player, which includes skins, mulligans, raffle tickets, closest to line and pin, breakfast, lunch and dinner. The tournament is limited to the first 108 players.

Village Dodge is donating a New Chrysler/Dodge for a hole-in-one the 17th hole; and Metz Wood Harder Insurance donates a week in Hilton Head for any hole in one on the course. 

This year’s proceeds from the golf event will be used to sponsor the Jerry Benvenuto Senior Award fund that will be presented to deserving high school seniors. This year Lauren Scalera, Levi Smith, Sara Snyder, Becky Love and Jo Ann Dietrick were the recipients.

ICC Football Rubber Ducky Derby

Ichabod Crane Football will hold its 2nd Rubber Ducky Derby on Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. by the Kinderhook Creek on Route 21 in Kinderhook.

Football players are selling duck adoptions $5 each or one of the following value packs: Quack pack — six ducks for $25; Waddle pack — 12 ducks for $50; or Mother Duck Pack — 25 ducks for $100 . The rubber ducks are raising money for the varsity and JV football team. Ducks will be released upstream and waddle their way down the Kinderhook Creek. Football players will capture the ducks as they float across the finish line before the bridge.

Cash prizes up to $500 will be awarded to the quickest swimming ducks and show tickets to Proctor’s Theater, Cohoes Music Hall, Catamount Ski Area, the USS. Slater, Howe Caverns, Albany Battlefield Live, Winding Brook Country Club, Pampered Chef, Cross Eyed Owl and many other area locations will be awarded for rubber ducks that follow.

10th Annual Kim Harvey Golf Tournament

The Mellenville Fire Company is hosting the 10th Annual Kim Harvey Memorial Golf Tournament on Oct. 3 at the Copake Country Club.

The event starts at 8 a.m. at the Mellenville Firehouse with an all-you-can-eat breakfast until 10 a.m. Golfers then move to the Copake Country Club for an 11 a.m. shotgun start.

After golf, the group will return to the Mellenville Firehouse for a steak dinner and awards ceremony. The event costs $85 per person and openings are available by calling Jim Winters at 965-7014 or Jim Brady at 755-8878. Individuals are welcome.

Bluehawk Blast 5K Run/Walk

The Bluehawk Blast 5K Run/Walk will be held on Oct. 4 starting at the Hudson High School. The event kicks off at 9:30 a.m. with a kids mile at 9:15 a.m.

There is a $20 fee for adults and a $5 fee for kids under 18. Registration is from 8 to 9 a.m. To preregister send a form and fee to Class of 2011 Bluehawk Blast 5K, c/o Hudson High School, Harry Howard Avenue, Hudson, NY 12534.

There will be prizes for age groups and free T-shirts to the first 100 entrants. Any questions can be directed to Anne Conner at 828-7467.
