A 17-year-old Columbia County Jail inmate was allegedly found hiding a “shank” in his cell Sept.11 during a routine search.
According to Sheriff David Harrison, Jr., the weapon, which has one end worn down to a point so that it can be used by one inmate to stab another inmate, was found hidden in the cell of a 17-year-old by corrections officers.
The name of the inmate is not being released due to his age stated the Sheriff’s office.
The young man is in jail on almost identical charges brought by the NYS Police from an incident at the Brookwood Secure Center, a youth detention facility in Claverack.
The weapon was turned over to Deputy Travis VanAlstyne and an arrest warrant for first-degree promoting prison contraband was issued by Greenport Judge Francis Abitabile.
The juvenile has not been arrested as of yet on the new charges, but remains in the jail.
