Scott Kenneth Sutherland
Gulf War veteran
CATSKILL — Ret. Capt. Scott Kenneth Sutherland, 46, of Palenville, died suddenly on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at his residence.
Scott was born in Catskill on July 10, 1963 to the late Kenneth Herbert Sutherland and Anna Laura Reese Sutherland. He was a graduate of Catskill High School Class of 1981, a graduate of the Airborne Course at Fort Benning, Ga., as well as a 1983 graduate of the New Mexico Military Institute during which he received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Sacramento State University while continuing to serve in the Army National Guard. He also completed Basic Infantry Officer Course instruction. During his career in the California National Guard he went into active duty in 1989, was promoted to Captain in 1990, was mobilized for the LA riots, The Persian Gulf War, and several national wildfires. Capt. Sutherland retired in 1998 from the 159th Infantry for which he served as Company Commander. During his service he received many known awards: two Army Commendation Medals, an Army Reserve Commendation Medal, three Army Achievement Medals, a Humanitarian Service Medal, two Armed Forces Reserve Mobilization Medals, a National Defense Service Medal as well as several other merits and achievement. He and his family relocated to Palenville this past year.
Ret. Capt. Sutherland is survived by his wife, Sophia Jean Cervantez Sutherland and their three children: Eleena Stephanie Sutherland (age 13), Kenneth Scott Sutherland (age 11), and Brooklyn Marie Sutherland (age 6); his eldest daughter Serena Laura Sutherland (age 21) of Windson, Conn., and her mother Rhonda Ray; three brothers: Ret. SSgt. William Herbert Sutherland, Christopher Reese Sutherland, and John Scott Sutherland; as well as their mother Anna Laura Reese Sutherland, all of Catskill; aunts and uncles Thelma, Percy, Norman (Chick) and Deloris Sutherland; in addition to several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his father Kenneth Sutherland on September 8, 1990.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 21 at 11 a.m. in the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill with Rev. Victor Nelson, Pastor of the Resurrection Lutheran Church in Cairo officiating. Interment will follow in the Veteran’s Section of the Town of Catskill Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A trust account has been established at Trustco Bank for Scott Sutherland’s Children or donations may be sent directly to the Sutherland family in lieu of flowers or gifts.
