In the 2009 Primary election, Loretta Hoffman won the Independence Party ticket in the town of Taghkanic with 13 votes to incumbent and current town Supervisor Elizabeth Young’s two votes.

Young, who secured the Republican party endorsement, has been the supervisor for the last 22 years, making her the county’s longest-serving supervisor.

Hoffmann has also secured endorsements from both the Working Families and Democratic parties for Taghkanic supervisor. Young has faced no opposition since 1993.

Larry Kadish and Tom Kiely both won over the opportunity to ballot for the Independence Party for Taghkanic Town Council, Kadish with 14 votes and Kiely with 12.

Kadish, currently a town councilman, received endorsement from the Democrats and Tom Kiely received endorsement from the GOP to run for town board office prior to the Primary.

For the Working Families Party slot for town council position, Joyce Thompson received 9 votes.

As of press time, the county Board of Elections was still counting write-in votes for the town of Taghkanic.

Edward E. Waldron received 14 votes on the Independence ticket for highway supervisor.

Winners in the vote for Taghkanic Democratic Committee members were Gary L. Stoller, with 100 votes, and Diane M. Rodriguez, with 96 votes. Cheryl E. Rogers, also on the ballot, received 29 votes.

Current Copake Town Justice Brian J. Herman won the Independence line with 19 votes; William Kane received 17 votes. Herman was endorsed by the Democratic Party.

Loredana Delventhal, a newcomer to politics according to the Copake Democrats’ website, won the Independence line for assessor with 16 votes to current assessor David Gordineer’s 14. Delventhal was also endorsed by the Democrats in her bid for town assessor.

In Canaan, Supervisor Richard Keaveney won both the Conservative and Independence lines, with 8 votes on the former and 13 on the later lines.

Jo-anna R. Michalek and Gary Flaherty won for Republican committee members in Canaan, with 49 votes for Michalek and 33 for Flaherty. Susan C. Johnson, also on the ballot, got 27 votes. There were also four write-in votes for Flaherty.

In Livingston, the primary race for GOP committee members was won by Donald R. Kline (county Republican Commissioner of Elections) with 80 votes and Benjamin Scrodin with 65 votes. Geoffrey T. Bagnall, also on the ballot, got 32 votes.

The Board of Elections reported that they received no complaints at the time the polls were open, except for a report of people campaigning less than 100 feet away from the Taghkanic Town Hall, the polling place for the town.

Republican Commissioner of Elections Donald R. Kline said the BOE received a phone call in the early afternoon about the campaigning. “We had several phone calls from Taghkanic,” he said. “Our history in the past has been to send the sheriff out to investigate.”

The BOE did call the Columbia County Sheriff’s office, who confirmed to the Register-Star that they received a call. As of press time, neither the BOE or the sheriff’s office had information on the resolution of the complaints.
