Ezica (Pete) Barber, 101, a resident of Pine Haven home and formerly of West Ghent died Monday Sep. 7, 2009 in Philmont.

Born in Greenport, NY, March 31, 1908, he was the son of the late Ezica and Etta (Boomhower) Barber. Upon leaving home 85 years ago at the age of 16, Pete, the youngest of 14 children, ventured into the working world at the brick yards of Albany. His career path progressed from there to a Steamfitter in the Stottville Textile Mills to a Milkman, to a butcher at the Hudson Grand Union, to a Machinist during WWII. These positions spurred him on to open his own meat delivery business, operating the Cook Coffee franchise and opening Barber’s Superette in Stuyvesant Falls. In later years he was again a butcher at Lou’s Market in Valatie and a Security Guard at Winthrop Laboratory. He was also a long time member of the West Ghent Reformed Church.

He is survived by two sons: Jon Barber of Newark DE, Neal Barber of Locust Hill, VA, 6 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Virginia (Petit) Barber and 2 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the West Ghent Reformed Church. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Contributions in Peter’s memory may be made to the West Ghent Reformed Church. Arrangements are with the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Valatie.
