Kinderhook sponsors Farm Fest

The Columbia County Farmfest is a semi-annual event which brings local farms and wineries together so that community members can get to know the local farmers and sample local food and wine. The event, as always, is hosted by Golden Harvest Farms, and this year, the entire town has decided to help sponsor the event.

“The Town of Kinderhook is proud to be a joint sponsor with the county to showcase all our agricultural products,” said Doug McGivney, supervisor. “This Farm Festival will not only be fun, but an education for all.”

According to McGivney, sponsoring an event like this involves a lot of volunteer work, with members of the town all pitching in to get everything set up and run smoothly.

“We will be responsible for helping them with various aspects of the event,” he said. “We really want to show how agriculture benefits our community.”

Admission to the festival is $5 per car, and includes booths and displays from farms around the Capital Region, including Kinderhook Farms, Tierra Farm from Valatie, Katchkie Farms from Kinderhook, Fix Brother’s Orchard from Hudson, Micosta Enterprises from Columbiaville, Hawthorne Valley farm and store from Harlemville, and The Farm at Miller’s Crossing from Claverack.

Not only will the festival include food and drink from local farms, but there will be live music, square dancing, tractor rides, and pick-your-own-apples all day long.  Face painting and free balloons will be available all day for the kids.

The kids won’t be the only ones with something to do though, as Goold Orchard’s Brookview Station Winery from Schodack and Chatham Brewing will be there giving out samples of apple and fruit wine, as well as a selection of locally brewed beer.

McGivney said that the town decided to help sponsor the event after discussing how important local agriculture was for the town, and for Columbia County as a whole. This festival, said McGivney, will really help the people of the town and surrounding communities reconnect with the local farms that are such an important part of our heritage and culture.

“The sheer number of farms producing table-ready fruit and vegetables in our county is amazing,” said McGivney. “To bring them all together at Golden Harvest will really be a great time.”
