VALATIE — The Cairo-Durham Mustangs upended Ichabod Crane 14-0 in a ceremonial game marking the first bout for the Riders as a varsity program, and first home football game for ICC Friday at the E. Gordon Van Buren complex at Ichabod Crane High School.

An electric crowd packed the bleachers and lined the fence surrounding the field to witness the program’s first game at the varsity level. Cairo-Durham won the ceremonial coin toss flipped by E. Gordon Van Buren and elected to kick off to start the game following a moment of silence for longtime Ichabod Crane sports supporter Paul Hacker, who passed last weekend.

After an 11-yard reception by Ichabod’s Jake Bewick for the team’s first recorded first down, Mustangs’ Connor Anderson caused and recovered a fumble giving his team the ball just inside ICC’s 40-yard line.

Cairo-Durham’s Chris Hoose started under center and came up big for the Mustangs, throwing a 12-yard pass to junior Kevin Hunt on fourth down to keep the drive alive. After a run for a short gain by Howie Winfield, Hoose tossed a lob into the endzone that was deflected by the Riders’ Bewick and eventually caught for a touchdown by C-D’s Austin Osborn to put the Mustangs ahead 6-0.

Osborn made another important catch later in the quarter for the Mustangs, this time on defense when he intercepted pass by Ichabod’s Bryan Smith and returned it for a 15-yard gain. Hoose took control on the drive rushing three times for 16 yards before the end of the quarter. On the first play of the second, CD’s Hunt pounded the ball into the endzone for a one-yard touchdown run, then reached the endline for a two-point conversion that put them ahead 14-0.

The Mustangs defense was in full control from that point as Anderson, Chris Hernandez and Winfield shut down the Riders running game with a combined 12 tackles in the second half. Hernandez also came through in the fourth quarter with a timely forced fumble and recovery with six minutes to play, ending the Riders drive and rising momentum.

On the ensuing drive the Mustangs threatened to widen the gap with a 25-yard run by Hernandez, but it was called back on a positioning penalty at the line of scrimmage.

Ichabod Crane got the ball back with two minutes remaining but could not get anything going and the drive ended with an interception by CD’s Hoose.

“I think the game went well,” said Cairo-Durham head coach Domenick DeMaria. “They were a tough team with a lot of talent and we were fortunate in a few instances. We have a few tough seasons behind us so it is good to get off to a good start, now we are just looking for a few more wins.”

For Ichabod Crane, Smith went 2-for-14 for 13 yards and threw two interceptions; Dan Van Allen rushed eight times for 23 yards; and Bewick rushed nine times for 27 yards. On defense, Ricky Smith had eight tackles, five assists and a forced fumble and recovery; and Corey Seipp had five tackles, three assists, a sack and also forced and recovered a fumble.

For Cairo-Durham, Hoose was 3-for-6 with 32 yards and a touchdown through the air and also rushed 10 times for 29 yards with an interception playing defense; Winfield rushed seven times for 20 yards; Scott Maynard ran nine times for 42 yards; Hunt rushed four times for 24 yards with a TD and also caught two passes for 17 yards. Hernandez rushed six times for 11 yards and also had three sacks and two forced and recovered fumbles; and Osborn had an interception and caught a 15-yard touchdown pass.

The Cairo-Durham Mustangs (1-0) return to action away against Watervliet Sept. 12 at 1 p.m. while Ichabod Crane (0-1) hosts Coxsackie-Athens Friday at 7 p.m.

" I think the whole team rocked including Bryan Smith. Don't think anyone should be talking down about any player on the team. Let's all keep the comments positive and show some class. "
