CLERMONT — The Clermont Democrats have announced the slate of candidates nominated at its 2009 caucus held on Aug. 14 at the Clermont Town Hall. All candidates were nominated by acclamation with approximately 45 party members in attendance.

Nominated for re-election to the position of town supervisor was Raymond Staats. Staats, a lifelong resident of Clermont and a Democrat, was elected in 2007 by overwhelming majority to complete the unexpired term of the previous supervisor. According to a press release, he enjoys wide support in the community for having taken on tough issues such as reassessment, the town’s financial records, the town’s highway garage and many more. Staats already has been endorsed by the Independence and Conservative parties. Clermont Democrats said they are proud to support him as their candidate so that he can continue the open and honest government he has put in place.

Nominated for the two Town Council positions were: Nancy Moore and Chris Nolan. Moore is a long time resident of Clermont and a lifelong Democrat. She is past member of the Farm Bureau and has worked for Taconic Farms in Germantown for many years in the Finance Department. She is thoroughly versed in the issues currently before the town and the Democrats say she will be a significant asset to the Town Board. Moore has been endorsed by the Independence Party as well.

Nolan is an incumbent board member. A resident of Clermont for more than 20 years and a Democrat, Nolan has served for 15 years on the Planning Board and for the past 4 years on the Town Board. An architect by profession, Nolan has advocated several issues among which are the repair of current buildings, professional planning a campus on town-owned land and open financial reporting to the board. Nolan has been endorsed by the Clermont Independence Party.

Nominated for the position of highway superintendent was James C. Potts Jr. Potts, a lifelong Clermont resident and a Democrat, has been the town of Clermont highway superintendent for many years. He was praised by the caucus for the excellent job he has done while functioning in a deteriorated town garage building. Due to his experience and preparation Potts was able to keep the roads open during the December 2008 ice storm and he secured FEMA reimbursement to compensate the town for those unanticipated disaster costs. Potts is considered highly effective in his job and the Clermont Democrats unanimously nominated him. Potts has also been nominated by the Independence and Conservative Parties.

Nominated for the position of town justice was Ronald Banks. Banks, also registered as a Republican, has served in that position for many years. The Democrats felt that Banks has effectively served as justice and has the most experience to continue in that role. Banks has already been nominated by the Conservative Party.

Nominated for the position of town clerk was Mary Helen Shannon. Shannon, a registered Republican, has been clerk for several years. The Democrats voted to support her in her re-election bid and she has also been nominated by the Independence and Conservative Parties.

Nominated for the position of tax collector was Joan M. Buser. Buser, a long-time resident and a registered Republican has been tax collector for several years. She has served effectively and in a non-partisan manner in this job and the caucus enthusiastically voted to support her in that position. Buser was also nominated by the Conservative and Independence Parties.

The caucus was unanimous in its support of this bi-partisan slate of candidates. The slate includes the people the Democrats considered the most experienced and impartial for their jobs. These candidates will begin campaigning door to door throughout the town to present their qualifications and ask for the voters support.
