Editorial — It’s fair time!
It won’t be long before the leaves turn bright shades of red, yellow and orange and the children are back in school. And with the unofficial end of summer — did we even have a summer? — comes the Columbia County Fair.
This year, the fair has many returning favorites that have become staples in the lives of many county residents. Annual happenings like the demolition derby and the 72nd Schoolgirl Coronation would be county traditions even if they didn’t take place during the fair.
The fair organizers strive to offer something for everyone and they have done just that. There’s plenty of music, including performances by country stars Chuck Wicks and Jo Dee Messina, not to mention local favorites Ghent Band and Ernie Williams.
For the adrenaline junkies, the midway offers plenty of thrill rides and for the faint-of-heart, there’s more sedate rides as well.
For those interested in learning about food — growing or cooking — there are a number of exhibits and displays that will offer a wealth of information. And be sure to check out this year’s Bounty Cooking Contest. Of course, what would the county fair be without the food vendors hawking traditional fair food, such as bloomin’ onions, fried dough and cheese fries.
There are also demonstrations of a variety of crafts, everything from fly tying to blacksmithing to wood carving. The 4-H programs presented in Columbia Hall run the gamut from going green lessons to a fashion revue where members will show off their sewing skills.
And what would the fair be without animals? In addition to the livestock competitions, there’s the perennial favorites, the racing pigs; petting of the exotic animals is encouraged at the Two-by-Two petting zoo and The Wild Goose Chase is a chance to see what working farm dogs can accomplish.
New this year is “Columbia County Has Talent” and the winners can go on to compete at the State Fair in Syracuse. Make sure you cheer on your friends and neighbors as they strut their stuff!
There is so much happening at the fair, it is impossible to mention everything here. Be sure to check out the fair program at the fairgrounds. Gates open 10 a.m. every day and the fair runs until Labor Day.
This year’s Columbia County Fair offers family-friendly entertainment and everyone should take some time out for fun the next few days. At $10 per person daily and $12 on Sunday, with parking included and children under 12 admitted for free, the fair is also one of the best family entertainment bargains around.
We’ll see you there!
