Hall of Fame — John Kraham, Athlete, Class of 1977

John Kraham is every coach’s dream. A natural born athlete, he played football, baseball and basketball during his outstanding athletic career at Chatham.

He was the star quarterback on the football team for four years and compiled a career total of 180 completions for 2,792 yards, as well as tossing 33 touchdowns. He held all passing records and some rushing records until his son, Zachary, came along and broke them almost 30 years later. He was a member of the Southern Conference Championship teams in 1975 and 1976 and earned a variety of honors during his high school career, including 3rd Team All State QB, All Metroland 1st Team QB, Troy Record Player of the Year, Southern Conference 1st Team QB, Safety and Punter and was the second player in CHS history to have his jersey (#16) retired.

As the catcher on the baseball team, Kraham was named MVP his junior and senior years. He played forward on the basketball team and averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds per game his senior year. He co-captained the 1977 teams and was voted MVP his junior and senior years. He was inducted into the Columbia County Basketball Hall of Fame in 1977.

After he graduated in 1977, he attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst on a full football scholarship and also played baseball, where he set a school record of eight home runs in a season. He is currently employed at Fairpoint Communications and remains extremely involved in athletcis through his volunteer activities. He has been one of Chatham’s varsity football coaches for 15 years and has also coached JV and CYO Basketball, Little League and was one of the founding members and coaches of the Northern Columbia Pop Warner.


Kraham and his wife, Michele, live in Ghent and are the proud parents of Sarah, Zach, Katie and the late Meghan Kraham.

This year’s induction is being sponsored by the Lofgren Agency and Metz Wood Harder Insurance and also supported by the generous donations of the following local businesses and individuals: Michael Knabbe, Muriel Faxon, Chatham Wine and Liquor, Madsen Overhead Doors, Callander’s Nursery, Drs. Greitzer and Curry, the Dairy Queen and First Niagara Bank.

All of the inductees will be introduced during half-time at the Chatham football game Friday, Sept. 25. The banquet honoring new Hall members will be held Saturday, Sept. 26 at Winding Brook Country Club. Cocktails and conversation begin at 6 p.m., with dinner following at 7 p.m.
