The other half of the battle: Primaries '09

EDITOR’S NOTE: The following story appeared in Tuesday’s edition but contained some errors of fact. Rather than printing a correction, it was decided to correct the errors and reprint the entire story to avoid further confusion.
On Sept. 15, party members in Hudson, Canaan, Copake, Livingston and Taghkanic will vote in the primary election to determine candidates for November’s election. Polls are open from noon to 9 p.m.
The deadline for designating petitions was July 16, and the deadline for opportunity to ballot petitions was July 23.
No absentee voting is allowed for political party committee elections. The last day to postmark an application for an absentee ballot is Sept. 8. The last day to appear in person at the county Board of Elections for an application for an absentee ballot is Sept. 14. The last day to mail an absentee ballot is Sept. 14. On Sept. 15, absentee ballots can be hand-delivered to the county Board of Elections only, not to poll sites.
Opportunity to Ballot means voters are free to write any individual’s name in whose name doesn’t already appear on the ballot. An opportunity to ballot is the result of petitioning within an election district; if valid petitions are submitted with enough signatures, this opens the race to a primary before the general election, and voters have another chance to choose a candidate for their party.
An opportunity to ballot petition can also be filed in the event that no candidate is chosen to represent a party. Opportunity to ballot petitions can only be signed by members of the party that seek representation on the ballot.
Virginia Martin, Democratic commissioner of elections at the Columbia County Board of Elections, said that “voters who sign an opportunity to ballot say, ‘we want to be able to write in a name of a candidate at the primary. We want to be able to have a primary.”
The candidates of these primaries are not necessarily members of the party whose line they are seeking.

Vote for two: Democratic Party; Geeta Cheddie, Sarah H. Sterling, Carole Osterink
Polling place: St. Mary’s Academy Building, 301 Allen St., Hudson
Vote for one: Independence Party; opportunity to ballot
Vote for one: Conservative Party; Samuel Santiago, opportunity to ballot
Polling Place: Columbia County Office Building, 401 State St., Hudson
Canaan
Vote for one: Independence Party; Party Richard Keaveney, opportunity to ballot
Vote for one: Conservative Party; Richard Keaveney, opportunity to ballot
Vote for two: Republican Party; Susan C. Johnson, Jo-anna R. Michalek, Gary Flaherty
Polling place: Town Hall, 1647 County Route 5, Canaan
Copake
Vote for one: Independence Party; Brian J. Herman, William Kane
